Geez louise. So, I had my medical, the medical examiner wanted paperwork from my GP regarding my asthma as I've said. I rang the doctors surgery to get an update a couple of weeks ago and they said that because I hadn't needed to see the GP in 3+ years, they didn't have my records, which sent me into a bit of a panic. A couple of hours later, they rang me back saying that they had found them after a lot of digging about (surely it's computerised?) and that they had sent them off. Great!

Today I get a phone call from the AFCO asking me "how was the GP/paperwork finding going?"...to which I thought what? And explained that they had sent them a couple of weeks ago. I had to phone my GP who confirmed that they had definitely sent it, with tracking....so apparently, somehow, that got lost in the post. After a lot of back and forth phone calls to the AFCO and my GP, they were able to fax the record over. Nightmare! Glad its sorted.
I'll be at Staffordshire university by September. Do the RAF do any open days or recruitment drives there?

I believe Staffordshire is in the catchment for University of Birmingham Air Squadron at Cosford. You could potentially join that and get a bit of a taster without too much commitment.

I'm going to university in Staffordshire to study web development. I've always been really interested in the RAF but it has been a lot to consider because you have to be there for 9 years minimum.

If I wanted to get into IT within the RAF what what I be doing?

New contracts are 12 years, but you can break it and leave after just 3, 3 is a minimum.

Also you may consider an Engineer Officer, as you'll have a degree by the time you'll be ready to join the RAF, ENG Officer the only non specialist trade that requires a relevant degree to join.

I emailed the RAF via their website so I'll see what the response is like. The ENG officer is a good idea and quite up my street!

Well don't expect to touch any 'live' equipment for at least 12 months. You'll have Halton then Cosford to complete first.

The trade is going through a few changes at the moment; Project Marshall will pretty much see the end of the RAF looking after the Ground Radio sections in the UK. If you don't know what a Ground Radio section is then in summary they look after all the airfield radars, radios and other navaids. That said, there are opportunities within the trade to work in a technical environment (transmitters and receivers etc) if that takes your interest.

IT wise, well there are ample opportunities, but a lot of it depends on where you are posted and what section you are placed in.

Most people will go to 90 Signals Unit following training at Cosford. 90SU is the RAFs deployable comms unit and deploys regularly in support of UK and overseas Air operations and exercises. Here you could work on deployable networks, satcomm bearers, data links, to name a few.

You could be posted to a UK base and work on any of the systems specific to that station.

There are also opportunities to work on specialist teams in cyber defence and this is a growing area.

There are opportunities to work with aircraft sqns maintaining their mission support systems.

Yes this is in preparation for the New Employment Model.

As an engineer officer you will rarely, if ever work on the equipment. Officers manage teams and make decisions at a higher level. It's the wrong choice if you want to 'get your hands dirty'.

It's very new, they are still implementing it, not just for the new starters like us, but also for existing personnel.
Same goes for pensions, they are changing too.

So we will be on a 12 year service contract then? Good job I saw this because the CO will ask about it I'm sure.

I'm sure you can still talk about 9, but mention the move to 12, as it is still 9 on the website, but website is poorly updated and maintained by civvy contractors, so it's understandable.
The only reason I know is because I have an insider info

The new RAF Careers website is launching soon with all the latest info so it'll all be available eventually.
