# AQA A2 Mathematics MPC3 Core 3 - Wednesday 15th June 2016 [Official Thread] watch

1. Is there an unofficial mark scheme?
2. (Original post by Qcomber)
Oh snap! What are they spew out for that exam? I need to do more fp2 asap. To be fair though, fp4 wasnt that bad, and i heard fp1 today was easy, so not guaranteed fp2 will be impossible
3/4 A2 maths units so far have been unusally difficult. I'm guessing fp2, m2 and c4 will all be like those 3 and s2/d2 the being standard ones. It's sucks that they decide that this year the majority of a2 exams will be so different and more difficult than nearly all the past papers.

I've given up revising for C4 now, I'll just wing it as I doubt any revision now will help

Actually I think at this point winging might be the best strategy, if you've already done enough work beforehand. Saves energy and actually that attitude can make you relaxed and less likely for you to panick - idgaf attitude I call it lol
4. Did anyone do question 9 and get seemingly okay answers?
5. (Original post by jtebbbs)

My answers to some of the longer ones
First of all, you can just multiply both sides of secx - tanx by secx + tanx and use the identities with sec^2 to get the result more easily.

As for the solutions, -88.7 doesn't work. This does give a point where cosx = -5/13, but cos x = -5/13 doesn't necessarily imply the equation has a solution there, the sin of x may be wrong. In this case, -88.7 gives -0.2, not -5. This pissed me the hell off, since the question specifically stated find all solutions, but I could only find one (and there is only one, I checked).

Otherwise it looks right.

There was one solution, -21.3. The other one will have caught people out.
7. I am looking at this noticeboard as my daughter sat this exam today. She feels so distraught and stressed for her remaining exams. This really is not fair on you guys who have spent so long preparingfor your departure from college to Uni.
My heart goes out to all of you and the pain you are feeling. I wish you well on Friday.
From a mother of a student and I want to punch AQA on the nose
8. What an absolutely horrifying paper Never seen something so disgusting in my life. Words cannot describe the resentment I am feeling.
I would like to personally thank AQA for destroying any chances of me getting into uni this year. It's okay, it's not like I spent half of my life trying to get in anyway ((:
I want my life back from all the hours of wasted revision on this rubbish "A level" exam which felt like I was doing degree level mathematics!
9. (Original post by abfb)
not sure if this has been posted and i didn't get part a in the exam but realized it at at home
question 9
a)
Spoiler:
Show
secx-tanx=-5
secx=tanx-5
sec2x=(tanx-5)2 ==>sec2x=tan2x-10tanx+25
since sec2x=tan2x+1
tan2x+1=tan2x-10tanx+25
tan2x's cancel so 10tanx=24 ==> tanx=2.4
secx=tanx-5 ==> secx=-2.6
therefore secx+tanx=-0.2
b)
Spoiler:
Show
secx-tanx=-5 and secx+tanx=-0.2
add the 2 equations together ==> 2secx=-5.2 ==> cosx=1/-2.6
c)
Spoiler:
Show
use cos(2x+70)=1/-2.6 to solve

if there are any mistakes i've made feel free to point them out
Daaaayummmm You've just made me feel even worse
10. Ill just leave this here:

I've just cut my planned revision to less than half of what it was. Going to be so laid back from now, the stress isn't worth it to get to my firm. And link you, I honestly think I'll do better by doing less, since I already worked hard throughout the year.

13. My daughter feels the same. I am really concerned of the effect that this will have on her remaining exams as she feels despair and fear, panic and her self esteem has been reduced to zero. I am hoping that AQA will look at these posts and realise the devastation they are causing
14. Please everyone email AQA [email protected] and request new paper
15. I've just emailed them this:

"Dear AQA,

I am writing to address the Core 3 exam set for 15th June 2016, which I (and many others) think was unfairly difficult and not in line with the papers set in previous years.Whilst the knowledge required to solve the questions was arguably within the specification, the application of this knowledge was a vast departure from the examples set by past papers. The difficulty of certain questions, namely those involving trigonometry but particularly question 9, was far beyond the reasonable boundaries of a Core 3 paper and seemed more akin in difficulty to a Further Maths paper, which many of those sitting the Core 3 paper have never studied. Even simpler questions such as finding the range of a function, or the question involving X^x, have never been featured in a previous paper in that form, which left many students vastly underprepared when they turned over the page yesterday

.The difficulty of these questions also means that few people have had time to check through their previous answers or attempt any other questions that had been missed out, which means that further mistakes are inevitable.The further demotivating effects of such a paper have also had an impact on students revising for the upcoming Core 4 paper, some of which have declared that they "no longer see any point" in revising, or that they are simply going to "wing it". I do not believe that this is conductive for students to achieve their maximum potential, and that the sole cause of this is the unfairly difficult Core 3 paper set this year.

As a result of this, I believe that the only solution is to significantly lower the grade boundaries from their usual position, to make amends for setting an unfairly difficult paper and to ensure that thousands of students do not miss out on their firm choice of university due to a 'rogue' paper. The mark required for an A* grade last year was 63, but this paper was far beyond the level of the 2015 paper. As such I believe that a fair grade boundary for an A* is somewhere within the 55-60 raw mark range.

Other than this, I see no other solution but to reissue a new paper for this year which is more in line with the standards set in previous years. If the grade boundaries are not significantly lowered, there is no other way to ensure that thousands of students can attend their first choice university and reduce the immense pressure that modern students face in sitting exams.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope that these grievances are fully addressed."
16. I feel exactly the same, I'm a mother too, and feel helpless that so many students are imagining their lives to be altered over the course of 90 minutes. Exams should be a fair test of knowledge and skill, and if the student is well prepared, the majority should feel confident they have given it their best. My daughter said she did not get a chance to show the extent of her knowledge which is a ridiculous position to put a 17 year old in.

yeah it's out of order now those who did AQA will likely have their firm Choice placed comprised whilst those one other exam boards would have sat an ordinary paper... Unis look at grades not exam boards
18. Me too....my daughter is in the same boat. Good luck all with the exams you've got left.mi sincerely believe an official complaint should be made.can anyone tell me teachers opinions? My daughter has done all this on her own as we live abroad, she has no teacher contact.
19. Thank you x
