Mr M's OCR (not OCR MEI) Core 1 Answers May 2013 watch

1. Hi Mr M,

First of all, just want to say I really admire you for doing all this for all these exams, especially as I read you were in a meeting till 6. It's really kind of you to come home after such a long day, and help put our minds.

I have a quick question: for question 5 ii) I wrote 'transformation parallel to y axis by scale factor 1/2.' I wrote transformation instead of stretch.

Will I lose both marks for that?

MR MMMMMMMM!!!!!!

You know you said you couldn't put up the paper but you could tell us what the question was - well, what was the full last question? Just cause I want another stab at it!

Thanks!!!

Fruity x
Aarghh!

The curve has a stationary point when x=-3.

Find k.

Is it a max or min?

Given that y=9x-9 is a tangent at A, find A.
3. For question 6, I put [square root]40 and not 2[square root]10 but in some working out for another question, I referred to it as 2[square root]10, will I get the answer mark?

4. Hey Mr M i compeleted the square for 7(ii) and wrote x= 5/2 +/- root 50/8 would i lose all marks

For the decreasing function question, I accidentally did dy/dx = 4x+1
So I got x < -1/4
How many marks will I drop?
I've answered this already. Drop 2.

If we got the correct inequality but didn't draw the sketch?

And if, for the transformation question, we wrote down y=2/((x+5)^2) and then expanded it? Any marks lost either way?
No problem not having a sketch but using the sketch is effective mathematical communication.

No problem but unnecessary for the transformation question.

How many marks Mr M would I have lost on the last question if I knew (or I thought i knew) there were two solutions, but i recognise the fact that the questions said Point A and not point(s), and I gambled as a complete 50/50 gamble and put down the answer as -2,-27 and didn't put anything about the other potential coordinates?

Mr. M ... I have got the right answer for, last question but i crossed it out, slightly, but that answer is still visible. I had the right method how many marks would I get? I was unsure, So because i got x=0 and x=-2 so i thought i was wrong.. cross out slightly with the answer still visible, how many marks will i lose.
If the right answer is readable and you didn't replace it with anything else you get full marks.

For 5iii I put scale factor 2, because it was 1/x^2 transformed to 2/x^2 (I think) - wouldn't scale factor 1/2 change it to 1/2x^2 ?

There was only 1 midpoint to find?

Drop 2 marks I expect.
Sorry I meant I got the wrong y co - ordinate. Would I still drop only 2 marks because of ecf? *sorry if i've already sent you, im new to tsr*
11. (Original post by HayyanN)
Sorry, I meant that I got the y - coordiante wrong. Would it still be 2 marks based on ecf?
I think you will lose 2 accuracy marks.

any idea what the grade boundaries will be like?
14. If I stupidly misread perpendicular as parallel on question 8, but finished the question and found an equation for the line where the gradient was 1/3, which was the correct equation for that gradient, how many marks could I have gotten out of the 7 available?

cheers in advance
15. (Original post by James_01)
Its because ive already sat c2 and s1 and got 70 in both and to average 80 (for an A) i need/want 100 in c1
I see. Did you consider resitting C2 and/or S1?

Its the other way around i.e. 2/x^2 becomes 1/x^2

writing cute ain't going to help you love :P
You're wrong. The cute writing won me over.

question 3 i for some reason beyond my imagination treated 6/x^2 as 6x^2 when differentiating, consequently got 12x +2 then 12 for the 2nd derivative. can i claw any marks back for at least differentiating properly, and following through?

i feel ashamed to be an A2 student and not be able to pick up on such a silly error
I'm not sure you will get anything for that.
19. (Original post by joetodd)
How many marks am I likely to lose from not leaving question 8 in integer form?
1 mark
20. (Original post by daisyrchds)
Mr M i know its a lot to ask, but what do you reckon realistically the grade boundaries are, compared to past papers (assuming you've done them before :P)
I've done them all but spread out over many years so I can't really remember or compare them.
