Being drunk doesn't mean you have to act like a bit of an idiot, whenever I've been drunk I've actually been able to remember what I did, which according to some people would mean that I wasn't actually drunk. This lad culture seems to have been conjured to make getting pissed and smashing stuff funny. The one time a person pissed out of their head smashed my cars wing mirror in I've hated this culture even more. Being drunk doesn't mean you have to behave like an idiot.
I do agree that being drunk doesn't mean you have to behave like an idiot and break things. But not everyone is like that when they are drunk. There is a small minority that makes everyone else look bad. I get royally ****ed on a fairly regular basis while at uni and I have never broken anything, other than myself. There is a lot a fun to be had while drunk as it gives people the confidence to do something they wouldn't normally do. Like scale the side of a building naked to attempt to gain access to a friends room. It is funny.

I'll agree situations like that are funny. It's the same for everybody though that a minority of people always spoil it for the masses. It's the same with religion and with the 'lad' culture that a few people behaving stupidly makes everyone else judge them under the same light.

Hope you haven't broken anything too serious whilst drunk though!

I would be sceptical that 'lads' exist at the better universities. I'd imagine it's just posh boys delivering the tricks they learned at their private all boys schools. They'd run a mile from a fight with rough working class lads.

I'm not convinced on this second point. Generally I'd find those at the top in terms of people in their 20s aren't lads, they spend too much time working hard to engage in the lad culture. Success with women perhaps, as women love lads/bad boys, but not so much career wise.
Look up The Bullingdon Club from Oxford. Granted, a lot of it is clearly exaggerated, but they epitomise pretty much very negative lad stereotype mentioned on this thread. People tend to grow out of that kind of thing in their 20's - at 18, however...

A few toes, in fact all of them. One or two fingers. 2 dislocated shoulders (at the same time). Other than that I'm all good.

Drinking is up there as one of my favorite hobbies. I drink because I like the taste not usually with the aim of getting drunk. Although 8 pints of particularly strong cider does get quite drunk.

I think criticising the whole of lad culture is a bit far fetched but there are aspects of it which need tweaking to allow everyone to have a good time.

This. I have nothing against people drinking one or two but getting smashed, damaging people's stuff for "banter" and pissing everyone off is just really childish
I can drink a lot, and I won't start damaging other peoples stuff, please don't brand all drinkers as vandals and thugs.

Complete rubbish. Class really has no bearing on people's toughness. Half the drug dealers and war criminals in the world come form middle class backgrounds.

Makes no sense. You don't have to act like a **** just because you're drunk. Most people just get HHH: happy, hungry and horny. No lad would ever smash a car mirror, that's a ******** thing to do.

I know a guy who did that, he was never invited out with the lads again.

No, it's just that a few people spoil it for the masses and all get labelled with being a 'lad' even though it's just a few idiots who carry out most of the stuff that is scene online. Having seen some of the lad culture online and people pissed out of their heads doing ridiculous stuff then I don't thinks it's unbelievable that a 'lad' would smash a wing mirror. I wasn't best pleased when I left for work I had to tape up my wing mirror till I could get it repaired. Seeing that I had just returned from work at 10pm the previous evening I strongly suspect it was a person drunk who indeed smashed my wing mirror. Heck there could even be a video of it online somewhere (strongly doubt it though). So it isn't out of the realms of possibility that it could have indeed been a 'lad'

The stupid behaviour (damaging people's property etc) just needs to be cut out completely, no tweaking involved. 'lads' probably wouldn't be seen in such a bad light if they didn't bring the hate down on themselves by taping themselves carrying out these activities and posting it online on pages like the 'lad bible' for the sake of a few Facebook likes.

There is actually no way to measure "success". However I would measure it by fulfillment and happiness. Socialising is a big part of life and even getting to a good point in ones career. Without those skills there is only so far that one can get in life.
I would probably argue success is more about career and financial than the social. I'd probably argue somebody with not as large a social circle, not as popular, perhaps not as many friends and not as good a social life but with a better job is more successful, but I accept it's a term that can be measured in a variety of ways.

I'm not convinced. I think they'd rule a mile from the working class real 'hard' lads, they'd just be seen as a joke, they'd be seen as posh boys who don't know the price of milk continuing with the traditions from their private schools. Generally I'd stick with what I argued earlier and say its something the lower classes and lesser intelligent do.

Complete nonsense, talking out your Anus...Files. Most criminals are from the lower intelligent ranks of society, and don't have Middle Class tendencies/degrees from good universities.

Getting sick of the word "Banter" being used, I swear young teens think that banter was a word that has only just been created. People have been "bantering" for hundreds of years, I used to do it when I was 15!!

Saying that, living in Nottingham, it tends to be the "lads" who get laid every weekend and usually have STDs/kids with girls they barely know. Also, from what I've seen, as long as you have "banter", it doesn't matter if you look 1/10, you will get laid in Nottingham, guaranteed.

Maybe if these morbid faux-indi girls stopped shagging these 'lads' there wouldn't be so many around.

Sick of hearing girls complain about lads then they have sex with them anyway, then pretend they don't.
