I translated it into real terms so it could be compared to other jobs. Sorry, should have mentioned that! The actual stipend is a good few thousand lower, but is 100% tax free and I don't pay council tax or student loan repayments.
    Ahh, I see! Fair enough

Congrats on landing the EngD place!

Thanks! Nothing like having three separate interviews totalling many hours to get in. It was difficult and at the time I also had a PhD offer on the table. Choosing the EngD over the PhD was very, very close at the time, but now I look back I am certain I made a really good decision.

Depends on the programme. The stipend could be anywhere from close to min. wage or up to £20-24k in London. I imagine the bulk pay closer to the bottom end of the scale.

20 for a PhD, that's not bad at all. Thought it would be worse, around 15k.

Again, it depends. I'd peg the average at £13-18k

You won't get funded for a psychology degree and it would be useless anyway since you couldn't even be a counsellor (never mind psychiatrist) with that degree alone.

As for the job, be an adult and decline it and tell your mother why.

And you might wanna lower your expectations for 30k when you don't even know what job you want.

I doubt he wants to be a Psychiatrist... Psychiatry and Psychology are very different fields (you're right though; he certainly couldn't be a Psychiatrist without a Medical degree)

Have you met any bankers or are you just regurgitating what you hear in the media?
