The Student Room Group

Carr Mills -Seedy or not?

Greetings to everyone!

I'm coming to Leeds mid-September for a full-time
MA course. I've been house-hunting online for months
now, and so far nothing ideal came up in the private sector.
Then, I saw this student accommodation (one of those large developments) on Unipol and thought it's quite nice.

Of course, the glossy pictures don't really tell you
the real story. So, I figure I might ask people who
actually live around there now or before. What's that area like, generally? I've read it somewhere that earlier this year few students were attacked walking home from uni, which got
me really worried. Is it the kind of place where walking at night is highly inadvisable?

Would appreciate any input on the subject!! Cheers!

It's made out to be worse than it is round there. I mean, I would advise you not to take the shortcuts and stuff after dark, but I've never had a problem with them during the day. The uni has also started laying on a free bus back to carr mills, can't remember the exact times but it's basically so students don't have to walk back in the dark. If you get really stuck then a taxi from the uni with Amber cars is really cheap. I'm sure you'll be fine round there, it is really convenient for stuff, just use common sense really

Hi there!!

Thanks for such a detailed reply. I was pretty hesitant before just
for security reason, but I guess it should be alright as long as I stay vigilant. You're a big help!! :-) TKS!!
My girlfriend lived there last year so I stayed a fair few times. We never had any issues personally but she heard of a lot of people getting mugged on a fairly frequent basis. The free bus between uni/Car Mills is nice, but not many places have such a reputation that the university has to provide such a service in the first place...

Also, this year, the university don't own it any more - it's privately run. I'd be really hesitant to sign up with any student halls company that weren't controlled through the university. If anything goes wrong it's more likely that a private company won't be as quick to help, or will try to charge you for every miniscule thing.

If you have your heart set on halls (as opposed to moving into a shared house) then it's not the worst choice - the rooms are good as halls go and they're all en suite, but just be smart.
Actually yeah I forgot about the privately run thing, that's something to consider. Although I do have to say that help was a wee bit non existent when I was there and it was uni run. There were quite a few issues with maintenance and security which were never answered, although this might be typical of halls, not really sure. My point is that it's quite likely that it won't go drastically down the pan

I just spent the last hour and a half on TSR browsing through all the threads on carr mills. 99.9% of them are negative, and some of the descriptions really freaked me out. I was drawned mostly by the price and the nice-looking pics on the website, but now it seems like the most horrible place on earth. (for a female international postgrad student like me anyways. I am quite cheap, but I don't wanna have to constantly look over my shoulder while walking home like I am in a frigging Quentin Taratino's movie.

Besides, now it's privately owned,I suppose uni would most probably cancel the shuttle service. Anyways, really appreciate you guys for all the info, I guess I'll have to start look elsewhere. :-)
If it helps, my best friends lived at Sentinel towers, Concept place and Oxley, and they're all really nice. The first two can be quiet or loud depending on your flatmates, and Oxley isn't really walking distance from uni (although there is a bus like every 5 minutes so you're never stuck), but that's really the only bad point I saw. It just depends what you're after from your accommodation really

Hi there!!
I am sure they are all quite lovely, but the thing is the naiveté in me somehow managed to persuade me not to apply for school residence back in July coz I thought
plenty of private accommodation will just free themselves up come September. Boy ,was I wrong about this! Well, I did a bit of googling on IQ, and it seems alright,so maybe that's where I am going. Anyone in IQ atm??

I wouldn't bother with Carr Mills. It's not in a residential area, which should send the alarm bells ringing immediately, and it's owned by an Irish private consortium who, i think, are in financial difficulties.

Carr Mills is on a main road and in the daytime there are plenty of people, mostly students walking back and forth from Uni etc. There are still people about till 9pm, so walking would be fine. Think the night bus still runs and is around £1, otherwise get an Uber back if it’s late. Security gates and cameras at the hall entrance. Rooms spacious, shared kitchens modern. Cheaper than some halls but a bit further away, can walk it easily in the day. Wouldn’t let old news put you off it’s run by a different company now. Some areas of Hyde park etc are dodgy to get back to, but it doesn’t put people off renting there. Carr Mills is more secure than anything there for sure.
