Best degree for graduate entry medicine

Hi,

What degree do you guys think is best in order to do graduate entry medicine. Im thinking of chemistry but im worried that this may not have enough biology in it. Im also considering pharmacology, medicinal chemistry and biomedical science.

Are there any medics on a graduate entry course who have done any of these courses?

Thanks

Biomed or pharmacology, but God help you doing a whole degree in pharmacology. As far as I am aware, biomed is considered the usual choice.

Biomedicine is the 'usual' yes. But you will have just the same chance with a similar degree like genetics or anatomy, in fact in may even be of advantage.

Wouldn't it depend on many things, i know nottingham and swansea will take on ANY degree! I'll be applying for grad med (hopefully!) with a nursing degree, which IMO actually puts me at a disadvantage

it'll show a lack of commitment, indecesiveness etc.

Sure, but I think you come up against that really with any degree you have going onto a graduate entry medicine course.

Maybe, they'd probably ask why i didn't apply in the first place, and the only argument i have is that 'i didn't want too' lol

Well it might go against you more if you had the grades. I just had awful grades :p:

meh, aab, with a b in bio, and no chemistry, im just going to apply for unis which dont look at grades, am still debating whether to apply straight after the degree or wait 1-2 years whilst working as a staff nurse

what do u think of doing GENETICS and then graduate entry medicine?

Reply 11

since genetics is a health science /biomed is very likely it is accepted by all of the unis. I did medical biochemistry and i can't remember when applying that none of unis accepted the degree. Just be careful when applying and check individual unis.

not really, it's usually because a nursing degree doesn't contain enough basic science. But some unis accept the degree plus a year or so of post graduate working as a nurse.

Just spoke to a group of qualified doctors and they all agreed that Radiology is the best and that Bio-medical Sciences is useless.

what about biomedical enginnering from imperial?

well there is enough basic science, but..i want to know more, i want to be able to take that step forward with the care of my patients, im feeling at the moment rather frustrated with the nursing resouces, environment of staff and the past 3 shifts ive been on, i've just been crying when getting home, and dont think i want to be making decisions over whether a patient needs a bed pan or commode for the rest of my career! I never went into nursing to make this decision, and feel guilty that im having a change of heart :frown:

I'm currently due for an undergraduate degree in accounting, and aiming for med at graduate entry. I know that most ppl who have gotten into med at grad entry, would have done some health sciences-related degree. Will I be disadvantaged by doing my basic degree in business? I know some unis are rather particular about the nature of the undergrad degree, but it's surprising that cambridge and king's have mentioned that any degree qualifies one for consideration.

Is there anything that I could have done to optimise my chances of gaining acceptance?
