...Yes.

EDIT: As far as I know they are for everyone  It's while you "settle in" or something.

Are periods irregular 4 the 1st few months after you start?

Basically? Yes.

They can take up to a couple of years to settle down into a regular pattern and even then you might miss some due to stress or weight loss.

when i first started, i had a period the first few months, then didnt start properly till one year! apparantly this is normal my doctor had said. I started when i was 11, now am 21 and finnally after all this time my periods are regular, without the help of the pill
Wow, that thread title just invites all of the boyos in!

Anyway, yes, they tend to be irregular. I had one and then didn't have one for months on end. They were very irregular for a couple of years.

In answer to the question: Yes mostly, although you can be irregular for longer. If its something that is worrying you, consult a GP. I took about a year to become regular if i can remember rightly.
I started when I was 10, and had really irregular periods. Some were two weeks apart, some three, some four, some five, it was crazy. Then when I was 13, I had a three month long period and eventually had to go on the pill to sort it out. It was nothing to worry about, but I did have to have things checked. If someone has just started and is irregular, then it's nothing to worry about, if this continues, it's probably still nothing to worry about but it's worth getting it checked out.

it definitely varies from person to person, but the majority of people have irregular periods for the first year or two after their first. If they aren't regular by the time you're 17/18, depending at what age you started, then visit your doctor.

oops i misread the poll. i mean yes
It depends I guess. When I started aged 11 (on guide camp  ) mine were like clockwork until my Dad died when I was 16. They've been really irregular ever since. I went on the pill for a while and that sorted them out, but I don't like taking things I don't need...so I'm back to irregular again. Fun fun fun!
I started when I was 14 and I'm 18 now and I only get like,2 a year. But I was having a conversation with my friends and a couple of them are the same so I am confused as to whether this is normal or whether something may be wrong!
I've put up a Period thread sticky for you to read on it if that helps.

(that's why those stickys are there for...so there's less threads here and there for the same question and less mod work for lessthanthree)
I didn't realise I was so strange! My periods were every 28 days almost exactly right from the very first one until 7 years later when I went on the pill. It made things a lot easier, I always knew when to expect it!
Bugger, i misread the question and answered no in the poll, when i meant yes, so ignore that.

It's a fact that they can be irregular, but not everyones were. Mine were more regular when they started than they have ever been since.

In short yes. it can be the case for years.

Mine weren't, but I expect that's because I'm odd.

lucky you.

the annoying thing about irregular ones is that they always come when i least expect them to.

and somehow it's ALWAYS during bio lesson.
