From the photos I've seen suits have been fine, you might want a black tie for some of the ones later in the year though.

One the Lincoln hall's facebook page there's this pic from a formal, where there's a mix of people in suits and tux's.

I'm sure as long as you're dressed smartly it's more of a personal choice as to how smart you'd like to be.

No problem. It's easier for you though, you only need the one suit, whereas girls generally need more than one dress. :p:

how often do these formal dining nights happen? i've got a couple of friends at Bristol, and they told me it happens every once a month

They're pretty lax about it really, a fairly smart shirt would do in truth.

It varies from hall to hall and from year to year (I think it depends on how much they have left in the budget :P: ). Hu Stu seemed to be having them every other week, in Rutland we averaged less than two a term.

There's also university wide ones as well though, like the AU Ball. But of course they're more optional. :p:

Thanks for that. I'm not putting on anything more than a T-shirt and jeans for dinner. All this black tie cobblers just to eat a bit of grub!

I'd imagine somewhere in between. There are some times where there will always be formals; end of freshers week, Christmas and at the end of the year to celebrate that they can kick you out at last. In between those there's normally one, possibly more.

It seems to depend on how much the warden likes you all and how much money they have in the kitty, they are probably pricey to put on, mind you they only made the mistake of providing free wine once!

Its up to you, I only had shirt and tie. A few guys managed to talk their way in with just a smart looking open necked shirt, though you won't even be allowed in the room if you turn up in jeans and shirt.

If I have to wear anything smarter than a pair of jeans and a tee shirt then I don't think I'd be missing much if they didn't let me to be fair.

ok then, i might consider getting one then, as long as i use it more than a couple of times, oh and sorry to bother you with another question, but can 2nd year ug's still move in notts halls? or will they be kick out and focused to move out to private accomodation like most other unis? and will these dinning parties still happen if we do stay in halls again for 2nd year students?

You can stay in halls in 2nd year if you really want to, but only a few people do, constant drinking and complaining about fire alarms is fun in the first year, but you actually have to start working at some point.

Finding private accom is really easy, there's more houses than students so you'll never be homeless and the uni's very helpful. If you really do want to stay in halls then I think you get an alrght deal, you can choose the exact bedroom you want and generally get treated with more respect by tutors and wardens. Other than that it'd be exactly the same as first year.
