Remark information and questions

Poll

Should I get it remarked?

Should I request a remark?

Normally people request a remark when they have significantly poorer than the expected, feel that their results don't add up to what they expected or to try and gain those few extra UMS to make the difference between grades. It's really up to you whether or not you want to get your papers remarked but you need to decide ASAP, especially if you have a university place resting on it.

What EARs services are offered?

There are three remark services, also known as EARs (Enquiries About Results), offered by the exam boards. These are:

Service 1: Clerical review. This service checks:
 that all parts of the script have been marked
 the totalling of marks
 the recording of marks
 the application of any adjustments
 the application of grade thresholds

Service 2: This service is to ensure that the markscheme has been applied correctly during the marking process. This service also includes the service 1 checks as above.

Priority service 2: This is the same as a service 2 remark buy you can only apply for this if it's about a level 3 qualification and if there is a university place dependant on the outcome. Any applications not meeting this criteria is treated like a normal service 2 request. Don't request a copy of the script first as there won't be enough time.

You can also have reviews made of coursework and moderations however these can only be applied for as part of a group and can not be made for an individual applicant.

How can I gain access to my scripts?

You can request either the original transcript or a photocopy of your script, this can be to help you decide whether or not to apply for an EAR or to see how your marks were awarded in your papers.

If you want to see your script in order to decide whether or not to request a remark then you need to order a photocopy of your script, it's important you don't ask for the original if you may want to have a remark. Once you are sent your original script you will not be able to request EARs as there is the potential for tampering with the papers.

What about costs?

Unfortuantly exam boards charge for ATSs (Access to Scripts) and EARs with the costs varying board to board but as follows:

However, fees will be waived if the grade you received changes, bare in mind your mark may change but this is dependant on your overall grade.

I'm a private candidate, what do I do?

Awarding bodies will accept an application for access to scripts or enquiry about results directly from a private candidate. The private candidate may also appeal to the awarding body if he/she remains dissatisfied after the outcome of an enquiry about results.
When completing the JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) EAR form, the private candidate should record their name in the ‘centre’ name field and fill in their address. The private candidate must sign the form. The private candidate must include the fee for the service with the request form.

I want to appeal the outcome of an EAR, how?

If you aren't satisfied following an EAR then you can appeal further, exam boards have two stages of appeals, stage 1 and stage 2.

Stage 1 Awarding Body
A review of the case by a senior member of the awarding body’s staff who has had no previous involvement with the case.
The outcome of the stage 1 appeal will be notified in writing.
The head of centre or private candidate must take any further appeal to stage 2 within 14 calendar days of the receipt of the outcome of stage 1 of the appeal.

Stage 2 Awarding Body Panel
The case will be presented to the Appeals Panel convened by the awarding body.
The Appeals Panel will be comprised of at least three members, one of whom will be an independent member.
The Appeals Panel is not authorised to further review the marks of candidates’ work.
The Appeals Panel can instruct the awarding body to reconsider the case and may offer recommendations.
The outcome of the stage 2 appeal will be notified in writing.
A report on the stage 2 appeal hearing will be provided.
Awarding bodies are required to complete stages 1 and 2 of the appeal process and report the outcome within 50 working days. Centres are therefore requested to co-operate with the awarding body in order to facilitate the appeal process.

Important dates:

27th August:- Deadline for applying for priority service 2 EAR; deadline for applying for priority photocopy of scripts requests in order to support a EAR request.
20th September:- Last date to request enquiries about results
16th November:- Outcomes of all EARs will be received by this date although most aim to respond within 30 working days from application

Final pointers:

Whilst results can go up they can also go down, so bear this in mind when close to the lower boundries.
You only get your money back if the grade changes, rather than the mark.
If you have a university place dependant on the EAR then apply for a priority remark.

Hi, basically I got AABa, but the B grade was just 2 marks (478/600) from an A, so i want a remark, and failing that I will retake.

If I ask for a standard (not priority) remark, how long should it take to come back?

This is because I will then, should the remark not work, have a retake as an external candidate, which costs a further £30. However, I can only book this until the 10th September.

Well its been quite awhile since you've posted this, and with no replies. So I think you'll have more luck in the A level forums *moves*

It depends on a few factors, I guess, such as what exam type, what subject and when you send it off. I know it's not A-level but last year I submitted my GCSE maths paper for a re-mark. I don't remember it taking too long. On the remark result slip it says 17th of September, which is slightly confusing seeing how that's the deadline for remarks this year. Anyway, hope this helps.

According to the letter from my school:

"Ordinary re-marks can take as long as 8 weeks. Priority re-marks should take about 2 weeks... Past experience indicates that the sooner you apply for any of these services, the sooner the result."

Hope that helps!

Dear TSR people,

Most important info in bold but please read all.

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer  - I got in shape and had some sex with a girl.

But I also have a few questions about results day remarking of papers.:p:

This thread applies to all subjects, but I’m doing Edexcel A-level biology in a year, already have unit 1 and unit 2 results from jan2010. I really need an A* dammit! I understand I need 80% (UMS) in my AS and 90% in my A2 for that to happen.

I have done all my research but am left with these questions in mind (see below), and did not find any other thread on this please redirect me if the info I’m looking for is on another thread! I guess this thread may be useful to other people though I dunno.

1. First of all, when is it possible to access our results and where? On 19th August from 6am online and from 9am at school from what I’ve been told (?).

2. Can I obtain these (below); if so, how long would it take to obtain and what is the fee for each (I don’t actually think there’s a fee):
a- My marked question papers (U4, U5)
b- Mark schemes [I got the question papers and mark schemes for 6BIO4 and 6BIO5 from http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showpost.php?p=20828230&postcount=488 but I don’t know if they are the official ones.
c- Examiner’s report/comments
d- Grade boundaries and detail of how each of the raw marks are UMSed for grades A (96 UMS - 80 % UMS), A* (108 UMS) and full marks (120UMS) [Ie. if 80% raw marks maybe gives 90% UMS]
e- Marked courseworkI
guess only marked exams and coursework aren’t instant; can I request in advance (right now) for all those documents to be sent to me on 19th august in morning to get them straight away and assess whether I want a remark about 20mins after getting my results at 6.20am ?

3. To receive those more quickly, is there a fast-track option? Is it quicker if sent electronically?

4. For a remark, how does it work exactly: how much is it (£30? Free if it changes?) / when is it done / how long does it take (well I guess it takes 4/5 days???) ? A few weeks according to http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/Guide_to_A_Level_Results_Day”

5. If my percentage goes down after a remark, do they replace the old mark with the new one, or do they just take my (previous) better score? Yes :eek3: according to http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/Guide_to_A_Level_Results_Day” but wanted to double check

6. Obviously exams can be remarked, but how about externally-marked coursework (U3 for me) and internally-marked externally-moderated coursework (U6 for me)?

Does someone have a copy of some sort of handbook of procedures for Edexcel A-level which details all the information I would require?

Sorry if all this is a little bit wordy and I hope it all makes sense.:woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo:

Thanks

Hiya just read the remark info sticky (http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1355174)
(wasn't there when i posted)

But there still may be a few things which weren't answered - will keep updated

All sorted now :-)

:s-smilie: Just found that out using Edex results plus and got 85 in C3 and 93 in C4. This is not even funny man. (already got average of 80+ in AS)

But question, which would I be better off to remark? I really don't know. Please help.

in all fairness, I'll likely be in the same situation. Maths remarks almost NEVER go up as it's either right, or wrong.

I always say remark. What is the worst that could happen. And if you don't remark it, will you be kicking yourself?

I'm with this guy. Maths remarks are very unlikely to move up or down.

Are you relying on this A* for your offer? If you are I'd say to have the lower mark remarked as there's more opportunities for bad marking and picking up a few extra marks.

If you don't need it for your offer and it's just a bonus I honestly wouldn't bother. If it was an arts subject like E.Lit or History, maybe; Maths, no.

Reply 13

Probably won't go up/down... but give it a go anyway?

This. Unless you really need it for uni there's no point.

basically i got a U in my philosophy exam, which just doesnt seem right. I'm not excellent at Philosophy but 30/100 just doesn't make sense to me. Is there any way ican contest this or something?

Reply 16

You can have the paper remarked, there is a cost for this though which your school/college will probably pass onto you. You will need to speak to somebody there for more information.

Reply 17

You can opt for a "priority remark" to recieve your remark earlier if your university place depends on it.

Reply 18

i got 17/100 :P

Basically got my A-level grades today.

Achieved AAA... was 2UMS A* in Economics and 3UMS from A* in Maths, any point in a remark?

Thanks
