It's of pandemic proportions, but the solution doesnt only have to be biological it has to be eradicate other factors that are helping the disease spread.

The Pope needs to sort himself out and accept that condoms are vital in the fight against HIV/AIDS. With so many people as part of the Christian faith and taking what he says seriously he has blood on his hands.

top drugs nowadays can see you live 25 years +(the conservatory mp has been living with aids for sometime) whilst hiv postive imo it's only a matter of 10 -15 years before a vaccine is found.

Current drugs can (it seems) prolong life almost indefinitely, but do NOT eradicate the virus and are not really therefore a cure. The trouble with vaccines is that the virus is not stable like other ones we receive vaccination against (measles, smallpox etc) and so can quite quickly mutate to be resistant to the vaccine.

Public health is the way forward.

stop having sex simple!

true. the only way to prevent any sort of STD's is not to have sex at all.

but that is not the point here. we're discussing about the possibility of eradicating HIV and safe sex NOT whether or not to have sex.
i know this may seem not nice or whatever but perhaps if you was to kill the people with aids then it would not spread any more, as by killing the few you may be saving the many (don't mean to offend anyone by that statement)

but is that realistic at all? i doubt it.

The AIDs crisis isnt such a crisis in the developed world because less people have it and can afford drugs.

The problem is developed countries who can't afford the drugs and dont understand AIDs.... we need to at least subsidise research/administration of the drugs rather than letting the drug companies make a huge profit out of selling them...

Its a big issue in Africa as well as India !
Although nothing more can be done from the outside world apart from providing drugs !
The knowledge which is key to prevention has been spread !

The problem is, for this issue (and bear in mind I agree completely with you about this) the church will argue that people are contracting HIV/AIDS because they're not following its doctrine, and they believe that even if you have contracted it through non-sexual means, then it should not be implausible to tell you not to have sex ever again, since you are infected.

I disagree with this, but until the church can be convinced that the push to allow condoms is not merely an attempt to impose western, liberal (read: amoral) values on it an the rest of the world then no change will happen.
