Applying to Imperial with AAB (A-levels)

I got AABa
A in Maths and Chemistry
B in Geography (getting a module remarked)
and an a in Spanish.

I originally applied for Geography but withdrew my application in March because I realised that I really really love Chemistry.
Now, I'm going to reapply for Chemistry and one of the unis I'm considering is imperial.

Obviously, on the prospectus they ask for AAA.
I'm getting my Geography remarked and if it still stays B, then I'm planning to retake a module and boost it up to an A.

Do I have any chance at all in getting an interview at Imperial with this grade? Will I be at a disadvantage because I'm retaking a geography module?

Imperial is pretty competitive for chemistry IIRC cos my friend had to go to interviews and everything and even got rejected. Not sure if that is a reliable indicator...but ya know.

AAB is the entry requirement for biochemistry amongst other courses like geology and geophysics, etc (IIRC) if you're dead set on Imperial?

I say wait for the remark and then consider your options.

Chemistry and all other sciences are going to A*AA from 2010 in Imperial.

It's getting more and more competitive by the year, for 2010 entry, you will need at least one A* and two As at A-level, and they're also introducing some entry exams eventually. you could always resit some modules, and impress them at the interview.

good luck!

Yes, but she can't get A*AA as she has already taken her A Levels before the A* grade was introduced :p: so technically, the entry requirement for her is still AAA.

Put the B down as pending, take up further maths a/as level in your year out and say you changed your mind for the course..

I doubt you'd get in with AAB to be fair.

i'd say you won't get in

but that's just me

I just wanted to know whether it was worth choosing Imperial or not.

Well, you can still apply there. It's only one choice out of a maximum of five on a UCAS application! You never know unless you try

By all means go for it, Imperial will want to see that you're making good use of your year out though. In preparation for a natural science one of the better ways of doing that is doing extra maths. It'd also strengthen your application and maybe they'll pay less attention to your pending geography grade.

I mean you get 5 choices. Just go for Imperial then 4 that are AAB or less.

Don't be too disheartened. I know Imperial is very competitive in general, and I'm not sure how competitive Chemistry is, but I could hazard a guess. Retaking a module to get your A will disadvantage you slightly I think, but theres still every chance you can get an offer. My friend got AAC in Maths, F Maths and Physics respectively, and got a conditional offer (getting an A in Physics upon retakes) for JMC, which is extremely competitive (one of the most competitive courses at Imperial). Will be slightly harder for you, but is no way out of the question. Just make sure your personal statement is good and that you prepare well for interview. Good luck

For AS level I got
A English Lit
A Spanish
B Chemistry
C Physics
I then did Maths AS over the summer holidays as I wanted to apply for Physics. I got to interview, with Maths AS results and Physics AS results both pending (I wanted to retake my Physics modules) and Imperial still made me a conditional offer. Luckily I got straight As in the end (dropped English and Chem for maths) and I'm starting in October! If you really think you can get straight As, or whatever the course asks of you, then apply. Obv make sure you have lower entry uni choices as well, just in case. But don't be disheartened - I got a C in Physics due to a cock up on my part at AS and i still got in.

NB/ Interview wasn't too bad, though I said a couple of stupid things eg "is that the tube" when we were in a lift. BUT be alert as on our 'tour' of the dept we were being asked 'casual' questions as a group, the answers to which were then discussed with our interviewer just before our one-on-one interviews.

Eh?

It was a weirdly noisy lift and the South kensington tube station is right next to the uni - put them together, said "is that the tube" when i heard a rumbling, then realised i was on the 7th floor or something. Not my finest hour, i'll admit.:s-smilie:
