Raw marks are the actual mark and grade you get. Ums is what grade different parts of your exam fall into(?)

Well on my history coursework (i got it back and saw my marks) i got levels for each question, and for each paragraph i'd get a level from level 2 - level 5, they do that so they know how many marks to give you (level 5 being top marks for that question) . you dont find out the ums though, nor do you find out the raw, just a grade i think
Your raw mark is what you actually get on the paper and your UMS mark is where they scale it up to make sure it's fair, so if one year there's a really hard English paper, 78/90 raw marks might be scaled up to 90/90 UMS marks, but if the next year it's easier, you might need 85/90 for full UMS marks.

Whether you get told just a grade or a UMS mark as well depends on the exam board. I got my UMS marks for English and English lit (OCR) and maths (Edexcel) but just grades for everything else.

Yes, form what I have seen OCR and Edexcel give you UMS marks, whilst AQA only tell you your grade, but your teachers do get to see your UMS mark.

AQA gave me my UMS for modules 1 of Law and English Literature
On your results slip, you would see the grade and UMS marks. At the back of it, you would see a table of the UMS marks for grades A*-U.

I was with Edexcel for French and OCR for double science, history, short course RS and media studies, but I didn't get my UMS marks for any of them. For some reason, it was only OCR English/English lit and Edexcel maths that printed UMS marks as well as the grade.

yeh they use UMS as well to figure out overall grade if there are diff parts e.g coursework and written usually diff percentages, so they cant just add up the raw marks as the written mark will have more of a weighting so they use the UMS,

e.g in my French mocks, we had to the the reading, listening, speaking and written and so because you can t jjust add up u no 35, 33 ...... they put them into UMS, becuase you could have got ABAC, which is hard to work out into overall mark, coz you cant just average it, so you take the raw marks, convert them into ums out of 90 then you get an overall table, e.g 240- B, 280 - A, 320- A* (that is what it was) so in my mocks i just scraped a B with 243, but my mat ejust missed an A with 278, so although we got the same grade, he did way better than me, it help to work out top 5's in country too.

Ah, ok, it seems a little more complicated than certain exam boards then. I suppose it would be nice if there was a little more consistency...
Isnt it true that raw marks always tend to be increased, and are the grade boundries ALWAYS 80% for an A?

Yeh...don't worry if you don't think you did very well percentage wise in raw marks because for French mocks I got 89% raw marks but when they converted it to UMS i somehow got 98%... (352/369) It's a weird system, methinks.

Different papers have different degrees of difficulties, so the raw mark may not always be correct as it may be misleading, as 50% in a more difficult paper would mean that you have done much better than obtaining 50% in an easier one.

So the UMS mark compares how well you did to the country, so that this shows actually how well you did in relation, considering the difficulty.
