Worried about university

Hi,

I recently got my results and managed to get into my firm-choice university.

I didn't expect to get into my firm choice at all, and I missed my AAA offer by miles, but I still got accepted. Thing is, I missed all the deadlines for accommodation application and stuff. The chances are I wont get into the university halls now and I would have to go into private rented accommodation.

The thing is I was really worried about university in the first place anyway. I'm not a very social person and I really struggled with my time in 6th form, although my school gave my counselling and gave me lots of support which helped. The only saving grace of going to university was the fact I was gonna be surrounded by people and never be in the position of being truely lonely or isolated, but now that's gone and I'm almost scared of the prospect of university now :frown:

I guess I'm hoping there is someone on this board who has been in the same position.

Thanks for reading

You can always try applying for uni halls and see if they have any places left

i can't say that i'm in the same position, but i'm also bricking it. i can barely function at home, so god knows what will happen when i'm thrown in the deep end and have to fend for myself. whatever happens i'm sure that it'll be fine though. i'm just gonna be myself from the first day and see how it goes! also i've heard that staying in a house with other freshers in the first year instead of halls can be a lot of fun, and also that way you'll definitely get to know the people you're staying with, so hopefully you'll have a close group of friends if you do that!

Dude I am facing the same problem as you in that I got into a Uni which I missed the offer by miles and have had a somewhat troubled socail life lately. I am going into halls and I am going to get all the help at Uni I can including counselling

I'm in a similar situation. Never thought I'd get in my firm choice, yet by some miracle they accepted me.
I didn't sort accomodation or anything out either. Looks like I'm living at home :/
Not good.

I think you should try applying for halls anyway, and if you have no luck, reapply at the beginning of term, as people drop out.

If you do have to go into private accommodation, rent a room in a student house. This way you'll be around other people and will be able to socialise.

There are other ways to make friends other than through halls. People in your subject will always be willing to talk, plus there'll be an abundance of societies for you to join, all of which will probably have socials.

Basically, don't worry. I've been a fresher twice, and I can safely say there'll be tonnes of people in your boat.

Sorry to be contrary but I'd advise against this. A student house is a lot of stress compared to private halls, especially for a fresher. You can be a lot more independent in private halls, whereas if you live in a student house with people you don't get on with you're stuffed. Additionally there are bills and the like to worry about, and if you and your housemates are in a "jointly and severally liable" contract (most student landlords use these) one errant housemate can cause you serious trouble.

OP: Where are you off to?

You could give them a ring and ask if anything's left (if your accommodation options arrive in email; basically, jump the gun!) - and explain you feel you need the strength of the support network available in halls.

Spin it on its head and look at it in this light: although you might struggle at home, the additional responsibility in university might help to occupy and take your mind off things!

Yeah, I agree with the ringing idea. Give them a call, they may say they can find you something in halls.

Good luck!

Can I ask what grades you actually got and what course you are doing? I'm trying to get into southampton for an AAA course lol but I want the know the likelihood of still getting in if I dont get AAA

Honestly, if you're worried about uni, the wait and anticipation leading up to it is the worst by far. I know loads of people will say this but honestly once you get there it'll be absolutely fine and futhermore you'll most likely really enjoy yourself!!
