hi, I'll be commuting from St Austell in Mid Cornwall. I decided not to live in when I first started applying for Uni and I think there are many pro's and con's to doing this. Firstly, are you going by car, train or bus? Im going by train and the south western trains are known for being unreliable, hopefully this wont mean I'm ever late for classes.

Im also worried about being able to mix with people as the ones living in move in a week or two before freshers week. Ofcourse, you've also got an opportunity to meet people at fresher events and also people doing your course, but they may have already made friendships. I'm just hoping that it'll all turn out ok  what course are you doing?

Hurrah - I'm not the only one!! Lol...

I'm also worried about not meeting anyone, but I think I'm just going to join as many societies as possible and just hope that a few people on my course talk to me! (god, that sounded really pathetic!)

I'm going to drive if I'm not drinking and get the train if I am! You're spot on - South West trains are consistently ****!!

I'm doing Psychology - what course are you doing? How come you decided to stay at home?

Hi, I commuted from Paignton all last year, I went by train but got used to it after the first few weeks. Its quite cheap as well, £6 return.
After the first week or two and you've made some friends you'll find that because they know you travel far they let you stay over at there places, because the trains stop really early 9:30pm or something. There is a late one that leaves at 11:40pm or something but that will only get you to Newton Abbot. Hope you enjoy your time there it's a really nice place to study.

So do you still commute from Paignton or do you live in Plymouth now? I'm really hoping someone will take pity on me and let me sleep on their floor occasionally as I really don't want to miss out on a social life! The problem I'm facing is that I'm starting as a second year, so I reckon everyone else will have made friends already and I'll basically be the odd one out :frown:

Did you find that you had to leave things early to get the last train back?

Hi, yeah I still commute. I'm sure you'll be fine after the first couple weeks. you'll make friends. To be honest the best thing to do is be a bit cheeky like I was and when everyone's discussing a night out just ask if its ok if you stay at some one place as you've got a fair trip back home, someone's bound to say yes.
On nights out I tent to stay at one of my friends, but occasionally when we stay late to finish projects i do find i have to leave early to catch the train.
Don't worry about being the odd one out going in to the second year i'm sure they will exept you. Your all doing the same course so you'll all have something in common. hope everything works out for you, i'm sure it will and you'll have a brill time. :-)

I'll be commuting too. I'm sure it'll be fine. I'll be driving in for the first week or two, just to get to know my surroundings, and then getting the train.

I'll be coming in from mid Cornwall too. Maybe I'll get to see some Plymouth people on the first and last train!!

I'll be doing the opposite for a few weeks - getting the train first and driving later. Although someone I spoke to at the Uni yesterday told me that there's no parking for students. Have they told you something different?

So what are you studying? Are you planning on going out much what with the commute?

I haven't seen any parking for students - just the town centre car parks that are pretty expensive for the day. Add on top of that the toll across the Tamar and the petrol and it works out a lot cheaper for me by train.

I'm studying a Masters in Architecture. There won't be much time for going out on top of commuting so will probably just be socialising with the people on my course. Hopefully will make new friends and would be good to see if anyone does the same commute as me!
