I haven't heard anything about this, and I'm going to be Trinity mathmo. Do we get to go as well?

I have heard of this before in another thread, and it is only certain colleges that go. Trinity is apperantly not one of them colleges.
I dont know :s-smilie:

I couldn't find information about it on the web.

and it barely mentions it at all in the info I got given. I had to ring up to double check because it wasn't clear.

It was in a thread on this forum less than a week ago. However I cannot remember which thread it was. Appearantly its not too serious and gives you a feel to the course...

rep for anyone who can dig it up for me

I am just about to begin my 3rd year studying Computer Science at Girton but I originally applied for Maths w/Computer Science and as such I did the 'Geek Week' as it is affectionately known.

Basically its a week of introductory lectures for 5 (I think) colleges. They are mainly intended to give you a taste of what Cambridge maths is like and are quite useful even if it's a bit of a case of throwing you in at the deep end. The lecturers do set you work but it doesn't really matter how much of it you do (as I found out... =) ).

It's a good chance to get settled in before term really starts, even if Cambridge is a bit empty at that time. There will also be 'gurus' from each college, second and third years who are there to help you through the Maths and show you around. When not in lectures you will probably spend time doing things like punting and pub-ing.

Girton-wise, the Fresher's committee will also be around, probably organising some other stuff to do.

Basically, it's not as bad as it sounds.
thanks

Hrm; I wonder if I'll have to do this then.

I know that there's a week or two before term starts when people who haven't done Further Maths catch up, but this probably isn't the same thing.

Girton, Pembroke, Cauis, and at least one other college.
I don't think Robinson was one of them, but I'm not certain.

I think you'd know by now if you had to go though.

That's a relief :p: I've already arranged with my work when I'm leaving, so it'd be a pain to bring that date forward.
Yep it's called 'Geek week'. It used to be called 'Greek week' as the classicists who didn't previously know Greek would go up early in order to start learning it, but now other subjects such as the engineers go early as well, so its usually referred to as Geek week. There will be plenty of other people around, and it means you're already settled in and know people by the time everyone else arrives

I posted asking about it in the maths thread in the colleges and courses subforum last week - its caius, girton, pembroke and newnham that do it.

Apparently it applies to maths, engineering, classics and theology (for my college at least). I just presumed that it was for mathmos who hadn't done further maths/as well in STEP, engineers who hadn't done further maths/much mechanics, classicists who hadn't done Latin/Greek and I don't know in the case of theology.

For theology it's for those learning Greek or Hebrew.
