Seeing as a year bus pass is £150 and weekly's are £6, if you get a weekly pass for more than 25 weeks out of the 40 you have the accommodation for (and the 30ish that make up term time) then you're getting a worse deal than you would with the yearly pass - so it's probably better to get a yearly bus pass

ye the yearly pass works out cheaper and its less hassle
So there are two types of bus pass. Magic and unirider right?
the unirider lets you go on magic buses, it lets you go on stage coach and magic bus. Then there is another one called "finglands" "figlands" something like that, but in other threads people haven't rated them.
Ah ok, can't believe I managed to confuse myself with bus passes :P

hey i was wondering about this too! do our student cards have photos on them? cus i havent been asked to send any off or anything... :s-smilie:

Yep, when you register during Freshers Week, you get your photo taken and then given your student card, with the photo on. You don't get to choose the photo, and beware, it lasts you for the 3/4 years!!

It's best to get a little plastic wallet to put your bass pass in one side and your student card in the other. Your less likely to lose it that way. I put mine in something similar to this:

Depending on where you live on campus, but generally yes. It only cost £4 a week, and you could quite easily spend that in a day if you go out at night.

I had one last year and it cost me £156. Without it would have cost £3.20 a day to get to Uni let alone going anywhere else. Saved me a packet, but i don't recommend losing it.

Were you on campus or off? Still not quite confident in buying the uni rider if you live on campus...:s-smilie:

Btw is town/campus quite far apart that you need the bus to get back home after a night out or do most people walk it? Because if you have to bus it, it would seem worth it getting the pass even if you're on campus

one tip - yes your student cards do have pics. and you get these done during freshers week so youll look like **** on the card for 3 years as your photo cannot be changed right up to graduation!

I can't imagine needing a bus pass is you're living at whitworth park/weston/chandos/one of dem. Walking around Manchester late at night is generally a bit dodgy, I think most people who live in city, or at WP, get taxis.

I have my bus pass but i wont have student ID until a few days after i get to Manchester. Can i just use normal ID with my bus pass until then? I can't really prove I'm a student untill i get the student ID :frown:. Are they fussy?
Don't you get the student ID when you get there?

Do i? I didn't think i got it till the start of Freshers. I could be very wrong.
That's what I meant. It's only 4 days until then from the 17th if that's when you're going.
I'm staying in Whitworth, but am possibly going to be needing to travel to Didsbury once a week. Does the bus pass give you money off the cost of a ticket or is it instead of a ticket?
And how far away is Didsbury - would I be better just walking? Although I've heard it's a rough area down there...
Parents are worried I'm going to get mugged going down there, so I felt I should ask you nice people

Didsbury? Rough??? You have heard wrong definitely... it's notoriously boring and quiet. Nice to go to for shopping/coffee/meals though.
The bus pass is instead of a ticket. You will probably need to get bus, it takes me 40 mins to walk from Whitworth to Fallowfield anyway, and it can be a 15 minute bus journey to Didsbury from Fallowfield, depending where you're going.
it should have come with a wallet that you put the pass in and your student card in the top then just show that to the driver. if you dont get a wallet thing then buy a v card from varsity and it should come with a wallet you can use

Thanks.... Will tell overly panicked father that... He's all flustered about gang territory and me tootling along and being raped mugged and pillaged in no particular order :P
Wow I didn't think it was that far... I haven't got a clue whereabouts I'm going, I'm hoping that I will be told when I get there by my new district commisioner...
