Some advice from a 2nd year Swansea Student

Hey guys! I was a fresher last year, and though that I would just give you some fresher advice for you before you come that they don't neccesarily tell you in the adverts; these are from my experience anyways!

1) Get accomodation on campus! So many people complained in the village due to the amount of money spent on travelling, and having to get up so much earlier than anybody else - there is also no cash machine in the village that doesn't charge you to withdraw!

2) Do not go catered under any circumstances

3) apply for accomodation asap...you may not have choices otherwise

4) When you arrive, if you are put in the buildings with 5 or less floors, get to know everybody on each floor - it makes a difference, trust me!

5) Don't sleep with anybody in freshers week - first impressions could stick in a negative fashion

6) Bring a door stop - you shall want to use it to keep your door open in freshers week, as you all walk in and out of each other's rooms in your flat to get to know eachother

7) Bring some chick flick films...any guy who says they don't like it is lying!

8) Word of warning...if you have a guy in your flat that gets manicures and acts camp, that does not neccesarily mean he is gay

9) On the first night, don't bother with "tooters", the onsite student club, as it is terrible on the first day. Too many people, new bar staff, and you don't know anybody, nor do you get the chance to. On the first night stay in and get w@nkered with your flat mates

10) on the second night go out into town centre into oceana, or better yet - WIND STREET! That is the place to be in swansea!

11) When you go shopping for the first time don't get tesco value currys and other stuff...student poorness is overated! I managed a ben and jerry's tub every week this year at uni, and still had money to spare!

12) Don't sleep with anybody in your flat

13) Bring about 8 decks of cards. You will play drinking games, they will get ruined. We went through about 30 decks of cards this year

14) Drink till you puke at least once.....it has to be done!

15) Also, you have to play "Never have I ever" - that's a good way to get to know your flatmates, and get drunk! More often than not, obviously, the theme gets sex related

16) Most people have what I like to call a "fresher's Fling" - they meet, flirt with, make out with, argue, and break up all within fresher's week, and are unlikely ever to talk to eachother again - make sure you enjoy it!

17) Walk to town - it's a nice trek, and you can go down the beach if it is sunny!

18) Make sure, 100%, that you have a "slip'n'slide" a good few times this year! Grab some tarp, lay it in the corridor, flood it with water and fairy washing up liquid, grab a bikini and slip'n'slide! Trust me...it is actually awesome! Make sure you take photos! And videos! And facebook them!

19) "Ring of Fire" = drinking game you must learn, if you don't already know!

20) Learn some welsh

21) Learn how to use facebook!

22) At risk of sounding sleazy, bring some condoms. Get a multi-pack thing from costco. You will get drunk at some point, and bring a guy/girl back - best to be prepared

23) Join some socieies! The best one, I found, was drama - so join that one! Even if you don't act! The socials are absolutely amazing, and those guys know how to party!

24) Enjoy Freshers - it is actually awesome!

Ha, too late I'm staying in the village. I'll have a car though, meh, the distance doesn't really bother me. I can't wait..

Ring of Fire is a horrid game...

It's only a horrid game when you lose

im stayin in the village too! some good tips there, cheers 4the advise, lol ring of fire is awesome! gotta get used to the diff rules everyone has tho!

Indeed! The amount of different variations that I played this year was countless!

Also, try and get a Tony Lee ticket for the monday of freshers...one of the highlights of my year that was! Both times!

Also..big news! There is this guy called Chris Beard...kinda like a mini Derren Brown - younger, but IMO, just as good! He is putting on a stage show! It's been advertised to lots of second and third years, but obviously you guys don;t want to miss out - buy a ticket well in advance online! www.chris-beard.co.uk

Well worth it - I have seen this guy perform!

Also, on a side note as well - loads of my friends loved the village! As I said, the main downside they said was the travelling aspect

I don't think that they are as strict in the village either! Though apparently it is dangerous come firework night....drunk and fireworks don't mix well...many an incident of a firework through a window...

sounded fun though!

So yeah...any questions feel free to ask! Other than that, I'll post up as I think of stuff to say! :P
Thanks for the advice

Hi
Im planning on going to swansea this year
do the other students force you to play drinking games or do anything against your will???

Also is there ragging there ???
Reply 8
ragging or bullying or initiations?
I doubt anyone will try and force you to join in drinking games. I probably won't in all honesty as I'm not that type of person although I'm all for drinking and having a good time.

Pfff, I didn't spend any money on travelling from the HSV, walking and cycling for me!

On campus accommodation is already gone, I believe.

What would you say the experience is like if you live off campus privately because of all the rooms being booked?
Reply 12
Do you need a double bed for number 23?

Oh piss off.

HSV is the absolute shiz. I have not heard one complaint about the Village. On campus is expensive anyway.

Eugh.

I don't think I like you for pointing out the sickeningly obvious for 90% of your points and making out they only refer to the Sea of Swans.

Hey now chill chill - I remember this time last year how excited I was this time last year. Whether it is obvious or not, I always enjoyed reading things like this.

And I am talking about HSV from my standpoint and from other opinions I have heard as well - by no means do I claim to reflect 100% of all students, so apologise for any misunderstandings there. No need for the "Piss Off" part of your statement

Needless to say my Swansea Freshers, there are conflicting opinons...but one similar opinion from most is that Swansea is definitely enjoyable!
anyone know if u can get xbox live in the village? the internet thing seems wierd...

No, you can't. You have to run an .exe file to access the internet which cannot be added to XBL. You also can't play games online either e.g. all Steam ports are blocked.

No CSS and L4D for Jaime :frown:

I know! I am so glad i've got my own house now. So grateful.

Me and my flat mate talked about doing it, but because gaming ports are blocked there would probably be no point doing it. You'll just have to hope that your flat mates have a 360 and system link :frown:

Sorry to break it to you, dude. But also, one bit of advice. Don't take your xbox at fresher's week.

1) It's a distraction from being sociable.
2) However doubtful it might be you don't know who you're living with!
3) You won't need it in Swansea

edit - World of Warcraft isn't blocked though. Had such a big argument with the lib staff about that.
