Hatfield

Hi all!

I will be hopefully going to Durham next october as im currently in year 12, went to check out the uni about two months ago and went to check out the history block as thats what i want to do and stumvled upon that little gem hatfield! Looked AWESOME!! anyway went in, and upstairs and saw some rooms with like medievil old school doors! anyone know where i mean? think its the main building! anyway what are the chances of getting one of them rooms? are they nice inside, i just didnt like the look of the 'modern' ( ) bit of Hatfield.

Also, when applying to hatfield (i heard it was hard to get into compared to other colleges [???]) is there anything extra i can do to boost my application? Also are there a lot of hott girls in Hatfield, call me shallow if you will. and if you want a definition of hott i mean really hottt!!?

Anyway, i wouldnt mind being a castleman either, i was attracted to castle because i had it had a great college spirit and everyone else hated it (must be amazing therefore) but then i heard the same about castle? what are the odds of getting a room in castle though?

oh and finally, if you want a smoking room in hatfield, which bit would you be in?

ok thanks! :tsr:

As far as I know, all college rooms are non-smoking.
Unfortunately for you, I think you'll find that it's actually Hatfield which everybody hates, not Castle, despite the fact that Castle is actually the best.
Talking of smoking, our smoke alarm has just gone off. It appears that someone forgot to put the condom onto their smoke detector before lighting up again...*mutters*

Don't worry, a Hatfielder's here...

Yep, the history department is directly over the road from us. I can actually see it right now from my desk. So for a start, as a historian, this is the college you want to be at.

The rooms you mean are A and B stairs - there's probably about 50 people living there overall, and with 220 freshers in college, that's - well, you do the maths, I'm an English student and it's after exams so I don't have to think any more. They are gorgeous rooms, but none of the rooms are bad here (unlike Castle, where a block's actually been condemned... :p: )

On the hot girls friend - I really couldn't be a judge of that. :s-smilie: I'm sure there's something for everyone, though. One thing - there are more women than men in Hatfield...

And no, there aren't any smoking rooms in Hatfield. Our bar's also non-smoking, as are most of the ones in Durham. Smokers tend to congregate in certain areas though. Also, bizarrely, a lot of them tend to live in Bailey House, the 'modern' accomodation just over from the porter's lodge. Maybe they don't want you messing up the nice rooms  Maybe starting uni could be an opportunity to give up?

So in brief - Hatfield rocks. Any other questions?
Hatfield has the highest spider/fly ratio of any college.

FACT.
Castle having great college spirit? :p:

In our version of the prospectus i seem to remember it was the only college which didn't go on about how friendly it was!

They do have the best ladies toilets in the University though! (i'm talking about the ones in the Undercroft)

I've never seen a single spider ANYWHERE in this college. :p:

We get massive spiders in Kitchen Stairs, or at least two have visited me (in Michaelmas term and this term, this morning).

None in F stairs - must be too high for them to climb or something...

Hello all. I'm coming to hatfeild in october (pending two grades- but should be ok) to study physics. I chose Hatfield, and I can't wait to go, it sounds amazing. Is there anything you reckon I should know about it before I go?

Thanks
Rebecca/Becca
Yeah. Hatfield sucks. :p:
Heehee.

See the quality standard of insults from the castle dweller there!

It IS amazing - excellent choice! Hmm; some interesting but random pieces of information (though if you came on an open day or a college tour, you might know some of this stuff already).
- Hatfield porters are very cool and helpful - on duty 24 hours, and always about if you need something fixing. They are, however, all totally mental. Especially Dennis, the little one in the flatcap (though that could apply to most of them)
- College parenting is an excellent system whereby you get two second years to be your mum and dad. They should hopefully show you some of the ropes, take you out in Durham, and at least one of them should do your subject so will be available to help you out if you have any problems.
- Formal is on twice a week in the first term and once a week thereafter. They rock and generally involve much drunkenness (though you don't have to drink if you don't want to, of course...), better food than normal, and many arcane traditions - such as spooning - which will be explained to you when you get here. And gowns are awesome.

Those are probably the main things you need to know, apart from all the boring stuff you get in prospectuses. Any other questions, feel free to ask. And good luck with your exams/results!

Cool. Thanks. What exactly is the dress code for formals? Is it a normal suit with a gown?

Yes, it is. Suit, tie and gown.
And ignore the Castle people. They have to type so big cos they're not very good at writing and reading...

I heard it was because they were all inbred?

Yes, indeed it is - it does make certain parts of everyday life rather difficult for them. Like coping with their complex about being inferior to Hatfield.

Bring it on......

Oh, you know we can! Just out of interest - are there 3 Hatfielders and 3 Castlemen who regularly post on here?
I think there may only be two castlemen, me and becca, but there are several others who post intermittently.
Oh, and by the way, Hatfield isn't a college, it was founded as a Hall. Honestly, you should know the history of your "college" if you're going to insult ours! *cough*servants*cough*

WTF ?

..

WTF ?

..

Hatfield College was founded in 1846 as Bishop Hatfield's Hall, a place for less wealthy people who still wanted to study at Durham to live - people who couldn't afford to live in Castle and pay for servants and furnishing their own room. Castlemen like to refer to Hatfield as being servants' quarters, for some arcane reason...

*nods* Listen to Kathryn, she knows her history.
