he only wants to go uni so he can get pilled up and go raving, finally throwing off the shackles of the maths book

I know him too, he went to my secondary school and was in my maths class

He's worked so hard for it, so congratulations to him.
he may not enjoy it as much as he cant do some things that over 18's can do

and at 15 years 9 months im confused as wouldnt that make him the third youngest, not second youngest, in your original post
It's always maths for these kids. I suppose the problem solving skills are more easily developed earlier on that analytical skills.

Recent news item from the Guardian, BBC, Daily Telegraph, etc.
Niall Thompson, who has been attending a sixth form college in the Manchester area, has won a place at Magdalene College, Cambridge aged 15. If you are reading this, Niall, congratulations!!

When he starts reading for his degree (in Mathematics) in October 2009, aged 15 years and 9 months, he will be the second youngest Cambridge undergraduate since William Pitt the Younger, who was 14 in 1773.

The youngest Cambridge undergraduate since Pitt was Alexander Faludy, who was 15 years and 7 months in 1998 (Peterhouse, Theology and Art History).

Doesnt that make him the 3rd youngest?

14 in 1773 Pitt
15 years and 7 months in 1998 Faludy
15 years and 9 months in 2009 Thompson

THAT GUY WENT TO MY HIGHSCHOOL!

He's an emo too.
Well, we all know what happened to the thirteen-year-old girl to study maths at Oxford...

(She became a call-girl in my home city of Salford.)

I know William Pitt the Younger.

he went to my high school
Does anyone watch Numbers? This reminds me of Charlie.

Anyway I think the social life thing doesn't matter because chances are he will go there for three years and then take a masters of PhD aged 18 - so therefore he gets the full uni package and comes out younger than other PhD students with more time to live a good life.

(To my knowledge) he did his Year 9 SATS in Year 6, his GCSE Maths in Year 8/9, he took his A Levels in Year 10 and instead of Year 11 he's going to Cambridge.

That's him. He's not the recluse study maths 24/7 kinda guy you may think he is.

Presumably, it's also much, much easier to prove to an interviewer your skills. With maths there's no grey area -- you solve the problem, you get 100% -- whereas with arts subjects there will always be weaknesses because of the nature of the subjects and these, small though they may be, when combined with the candidates age may persuade an interviewer not to take the risk.

Who was it who said that Maths is a young person's game? I guess there will be advantage to him studying so early.

GH Hardy?

Going to university at 15 would be awesome!
Punching a bit over his weight, no?
