My girlfriend lives in Edinburgh and I live in Cambridge, we go back and forth fairly often, and its really not that big a deal. The train journey is about 5 hours and the tickets cost like £97, which is a bummer, but we buy child tickets 
I quite like train journeys. They're good for reading and thinking and you get to see parts of cities that are really cool. Going through Newcastle is my favourite, and coming into Waverley station.
Don't let distance be a factor, seriously.
