exam stress anyone?!

heya
i was just wondering (as i sit her with screwed up paper chocolate and tissues around me) how you guys cope with exam stress, or stress of anykind?
I ( like many of you) have 4 weeks on non stop exams, which my future depends on. I find myself having really bad tummy pains, being sick and having panic attacks which start a few days before the exams, so at the momet they are non stop. its esspecially hard as im a recovering self harmer so need to stay focused on not doing that, but its causing my damn revision to slip!
i was just wondering if anyone had any 'sure things' which would stop me  hyperventilating before (and during the exams) so i can concentrate on them.
I ask this now as i have an exam tomorrow afternoon and wednesday morning and then thursday after noon a double booking of exams!!
HELP!!!
thanks

Hi,
Above all just remember, there are many other people out there who are in the same boat as you, including myself. People have different ways of handling stress, I personally find talking to other people helps, go and sit in the garden or just do something (like reading) that takes your mind completely off exams and what you are supposed to be studying.

At the end of the day getting yourself so worked up isn't worth it - try not to see the exam as if your future depends on them, so you might not get all A's and B's, but it isn't the end of the world. If you have worked hard this year, and have put in a decent amount of revision, nobody can expect more of you than that - so don't expect if of yourself (I know it's hard - I can work for 6 hours and feel like I have done nothing).

Exams are important but they really are not everything, there are many people in much much worse situations, and whenever I feel sorry for myself I try to think of them and get things into perspective (I am not suggest you make yourself feel guilty!!).

If you are a recovering self-harmer then you obviously know your limits. Stick to them. If you don't feel you can manage any more revision or you feel nothing is going in, and that pushing yourself further simply makes you more stressed - stop. I am not a biologist but I do know that our brains can only take so much and the consequences can be dire if we push them too far.

Have a break tonight, do something different (maybe just watch TV), or have a bath perhaps. Get an early night. Get up in the morning with your stuff ready, have a good breakfast - go in the exam and try your best.

Good Luck xx

Here are some comforting words that I use whenever things get me down, sorry if you aren't Christian:

Matthew 11:28-30

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don't give up and quit.

That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are quite small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us an immeasurably great glory that will last forever!

Psalm 147:3

"Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand."

i find breathing into a paper bag helps hyperventilating, somthing to do with carbon dioxide- its higher in the air you breath out, so breathing it back in stops blood oxgen from getting too high. to be hionest i don't know the science of it but it works for me ^_^
Everyone feels the same at this timee.I find that putting music on and having a darned good scream and dance around helps!

And lots of Rolo biscuits....I'm getting so fat this study leave:frown:
Basically I can only talk from experience but last year for GCSE's, I was exactly the same and it was such a horrible month or so. This year I've tried not to think about it too much and to be honest, not doing as much revision, as sometimes I think the more you revise, the more you think you don't know it. Obviously I'm not saying don't revise but don't go crazy because you'll simply stop absorbing it. Get early nights, hot drinks and make sure you still see friends and take the time to relax.
You'll do great, I'm sure because it's the ones who do well who get the most stressed out because they are the ones who really care!
AND... SMILE!

it's probably because our generation is lazy throughout the year, or at least that much more laid back than people used to be. obviously some people get stressed no matter what, but i think it might be something do to with general work ethics changing.

Or it could be something to do with the fact that everything's so competitive now. Competition to get into universities, competition in the workplace and even to some extent competition among friends. To get ahead you have to try and be the best, which is super hard.

I'm actually calmer this year for A Level than I was last year during AS exams. Maybe the fact that my exams start on Friday hasn't quite sunk it yet...

*hugs* i know how you feel, i too am a recovering (well mainly recovered) self-harmer so i know it's hard to deal with stress when your used to using the self-harm to help.

i haven't had any exams yet but tehy are coming up very soon so i've been really stressing about it. best thing to do is try to stay calm as hard as that sounds. before your exams just take a few minutes to yourself and take some calm, deep breathes. clear your head of any crap and just think about the exam in hand. don't worry cos you know it'll all be over and done soon. and think positive. if you go in there thinking you will fail then you may well fail, but if you go there thinking i'm going to pass then that should help you focus. if you can take a bottle of water with you do that as well. i also suffer from panic attacks and i know how being in an exam can make you feel worse, if needs be, if you think you are about to have one ask to go to the toilet, and calm yourself down. you can get through your exams and you will get through them. and if it doesn't go to plan, then don't think these exams are your only option, your life is worth more.

*hugs* good luck with your exams and stay safe

Im stressed over exams too.. and practically flunked my psychology exam because i was WAY too stressed and nervous i totally forgot everything i studied the moment i got into the hall.
My last exam.. finally is this thursday.. Religious Studies Exam... I've found that studying with a friend can help reduce the stress specially when your teaching each other stuff and making RANDOM jokes [i studied 4 hours straight today with a friend and i can tell my mom abt the topic in depth!!]

just so you know, thats actually 2 corinthians 4:8-10 (i think) not Mathew 11:28-30. Though they are both relevant.
i keep all the stress away
if i stress i do badly.
so now after so much practice i just dont stress over exams....

geting the results... its like all the exam and results stress rolled into one!!!
