It's probably not there :p: Go into a branch.

I had to go into the branch to do mine

Login to internet banking, click on the student account, and click Overdraft on the left.

I doubt they would just let you activate an overdraft facility online (I might be wrong, but it seems silly). Just go into the branch

I just rang up HSBC to activate an overdraft on my student account (I'm in the second year of uni this year) and he told me I have to do it by going into the branch or I can do it online.
I cannot find anywhere on the site that allows you to apply online. Am I missing something or is it really not there?
HEEELLLLPPP

You can I believe though I've never done it myself.
Log onto personal banking, click the account you want to change the overdraft on and then click 'Amend Overdraft'

Aah
Clicked the overdraft button and got a "sorry, you're not eligible for a change in your overdraft limit" message. So I'm guessing amend overdraft is for if you have an existing one.
Thanks anyway

Will pop into my local branch!

Oh sorry I read your Q a bit wrong. Sounds like the bank guy didn't listen to you proper either!

What sort of things do they ask you??

I went into a branch to activate mine, it started on £750, then doubled to £1500 - and thats as much as you get with HSBC.

How long did the process take in the branch? What sort of questions do they ask?

It was straightaway I think.
I can't remember any real questions asked as it was in first year, and I'm now in third year.
But they'll be doing a credit check on the computer more than asking you questions. Unless you've got into a lot of arrears or overdue credit, then you should be fine.

I had a little bit of trouble when I didn't know how to pay off a store card and it got so bad I was ashamed to ask my Mum (plus she'd have killed me for gettin one) so I didn't pay it off for a few months, but it's all paid off now. I wonder how much that'd affect it :frown:

You shouldn't have had too much credit on it to get into *that* much trouble. I only have £350 or something on my Topshop card which is disappointing but a good thing in the long run.
You should still be ok but no point worrying till you go in and ask them.

I got mine a few weeks after I'd started uni, you might find you have to enrol first and show proof of attendig uni. I can't quite remember.
I used a bit of my overdraft in second year to pay the first bit of rent (which is often due before the first loan installment) but since I didn't have it in first year, I borrowed money off my parents.
