Has anyone here actually done any racing? Track or therwise?

My dad a 2 year old Punto with 14k on the clock, he had it for four years and had done 50,000 miles in it. The cat convertor failed, so did the exhaust apart from this it was a fine car, it was a really reliable and was driven mostly in the city which is very hard work.

It was a brilliant little car, sadly I don't think the modern generation Punto's are as reliable.

My dad has an Escort now, its older than the Punto was, it has 85K on the clock now, but its still been very reliable it costs about £300-£400 in garage bills a year which includes labour, MOTs and servicing.

Fords, Fiats etc can be very reliable as longs as they are serviced. I know of so many people who have had trouble with brand new cars.

Also I tend to ignore the JD power surveys as much is this is concerned with dealers and I would never have a new car anyway so I will always avoid main dealers.

My uncle used have a really a good job and drive top spec BMWs, he now owns a Skoda Fabria and has done nearly 100k without any trouble.

I've been in 125cc karts once or twice. But nothing more. I'd love to do it, Auto Italia have an open track day at Silverstone just I don't really have anything that sporty to drive with

That's my problem too. I'd love to go to the 'Ring, Santa Pod, Silverstone, etc., but somehow I don't think a diesel Golf is going to work. Not the fact that its a golf, or a diesel golf, or that it's stock. It's the fact that it's a MkIII. They're nice to look at, but the absolute worst to drive. So much body roll, I feel it wants to scrape the side view mirrors. I'd love to have a Mk II GTi. The best Golfs, IMO. Well the new ones are great too, but I couldn't afford one. My Dad has a Mk II CL Golf. The thing is even an auto, but it's still a lot more fun to drive. You can really feel the road, and there's a lot mre feed back and significantly less body roll.

The Pug 206 GTi's are supposed to be one of the best handling cars around. Not quite that fast, just more pleasurable.

Kart racing is fun. My cousin use to race them. They're like 3" off the ground, completely open, and get up to <100mph almost!! Quite a rush!

Yeah even the ones that max out at 40Mph it feels like alot more with your ass an inch or two from the ground!

Loads - Snetterton, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Oulton.
Snetterton I did in 2no 550's. One red and one silver.
Silverstone I did in my bosses Scooby
Oulton & Brands Hatch both in my 6.

This is how you really test how capable a car is. A car that can't make it on the track cannot be classified as a sports car IMHO.

Wow, sounds great. I want to try and make it out to one of these events. Hiring a car is pretty expensive too, if you want a good one. Did you compete or just run around a bit?

Favourite car: Nissan Skyline BNR34 V-Spec II

My ex's cousin used to own this exact car. I went to see her one day and I saw it outside her house and fell in love with it instantly. 530BHP monster worth around £60k and had a ride in it (people try and come over and touch it - its wicked).

Click here to see it. Its quite famous if your into the car scene stuff like me. It goes faster than 200 MPH too.

Now he has a Ferrari 550 - he's selling that now too though.

(Im not joking either).

very respectable ride :top:
My car:
VW Golf 1.8T

I've had the ECU remapped by REVO, and now the power has increased to about 200bhp (They tested it on the rolling road, and it got to 207bhp). It made a HUUGE difference, It was only 150bhp standard.
Ive also changed the little 15" VW alloys to 17" Mille Miglia's, and also increased the width of the tyres, so it stoped wheel spinning as much.
Im going to fit some uprated brakes soon. Maybe some the big Brembo versions for the front wheels (the ones with the huge red calipers  )
I had some problems with insurance when I got it at 17, but the premiums has fallen to under £2k now, so my parents are happier.

I didn't hire any of them! The two 550's are my directors which he let me fly about in. In fact I tell a small lie, the Red one I was not allowed to use due to having an advanced sports kit on. Who cares! I still drove the silver one.
2 ton of car literally tearing the backsides out of Caterhams! Great

Track days are about £120 and soon to go up further nationally. It is a hoot, but if you are a novice don't be too hot headed or you'll have no car to drive home in. I wore out my pads and disks at Oulton in my 6 and had to relace them before I came home! It pays to no what you are doing, especially if you really are hitting the brakes hard.

I wasn't implying that you hired, simply that if I were to go here, I'd have to hire something.

Yeah, I used to autocross in the states, and you pretty much have to bring new pads!!

Damn!! £120!!! What does that get? It usually a maximum of like $50-75 in America and that includes a helmet, side numbers, and a chance at a small trophy if you win in you class.

Really cheap fun is going to the Drag Strip. $10 and you can race all night longs, from 4-12 for as many runs as you can get in. And you don't need a helmet unless your car is less than 13 sec in the 1/4mile, or something like that.

Thats the problem with the UK. Everything is so expensive.
And you get that is sessions. I mean, you can't just go on the track anytime, it has to be to their schedule.

Americans know how to have fun whereas the Britons want to overcharge as much as possible for everything involved in petroleum.
