Which Oxford college fits my personality?? :S

Hi guys!

I'm applying to Oxford university to study english and french this year but i'm having trouble choosing a college that is right for me. I'm work a lot but i don't want to be almost handcuffed to my desk every day with enormous workloads, i want a large college with ensuite accomodation for first years, a college i can live in for my entire degree, a college fairly close to the town centre, serves good food, and most importantly, has a good JCR because i want to have fun when i'm there and have a good amount of organised parties, "bops", balls and so on.

If anyone knows a college that ticks all those boxes, please help!!

thank you!

The one that springs out to me is Wadham, but I don't know about the accommodation in a lot of detail I'm afraid.

Wadham doesn't have ensuite, and you have to live out in second year. Not a perfect match!

Merton largely fits the bill! We don't have en-suite first year rooms, but you are pretty much guaranteed an en-suite over the course of your degree if it's important to you - if you have special circumstances that require an en-suite, obviously you'll be given one - and is guaranteed for your entire course. Our workloads, contrary to popular belief, are largely the same as at other colleges, with some considerably reduced - this is mainly because the tutors are actually relaxed, and help us get better results by offering more support when exams come round (e.g. optional tutorials/classes. I know the English tutors are really good regarding this - they have near daily classes in Finals term, which are all optional, as well as 'the guarantee' of Prof McCabe being able to see you within 24 hours, or something like that, at least, if you need to discuss anything, which I think is pretty amazing for a busy academic  ). The food is always edible, largely good, sometimes amazing. The grounds are reasonably spacious - the college site itself is big, and the Holywell street annexe, where most 2nd and some 3rd years live, as well as some Grads, is nice, plus we have some good sized sports fields and punts at St. Catz. We're not far from the centre of town - we're a minute or two south of the High Street, but the Holywell St. annexe couldn't really be much more central (it's more central than College itself!). The BOPs are amazing - they go on longer and later than most other colleges I know of, from 9pm-2am, down at the Sports Pavilion, typically every fortnight. Drinks are cheap, and music is generally quite cheesy, though there is a dance slant on the music at the beginning of the Bops, so there's something for everyone. I also went to the Merton Narnia Ball when I arrived as a Fresher, so the next one will be in the winter of 2011, and I thought it was pretty amazing, but it will probably depend on the Ball Committee at the time, and it's not uncommon to just organise a huge group of friends to go to another college ball (it wouldn't be any fun just staying at your own college!). The Exec Committee put a lot of effort into organising events (cocktail making, karaoke, wine tasting, Welfare Teas and Film Nights every week, Garden parties, Christmas parties, and ridiculously themed BOPs!), and the running of the JCR as a whole. Having slogged my heart out last year as an Execcie, I can't think of a friendlier, more relaxed place but also exciting place to live and work, possibly because I've not seen many other places, but then I've not needed to!
That said, I'm sure you'd enjoy anywhere - people always do. I'd have a look round the colleges, if possible, and just see which one feels right. Hope everything works out, and good luck

merton is for you.
En suite bathrooms in accommodation for first years isn't typical at any college, so you might have to lower your standards there.
Worcester! 72% of all undergrad accommodation is ensuite, so there's a good chance you'll get one of these rooms! 5 mins from the city centre (probs less if you walk quicker than me... which is very likely  ). You can be accommodated the whole time whilst you're there. Very good food which is heavily subsidised. The JCR as in the room is a bit crappy, but the college social life is buzzing and we're known for not doing so well on the Norrington Table coz we're too busy doing other things (sports, music, drama or clubbing!) :yeah:

Edit: I think I may have told you this before but it's worth repeating!
