Why are people suggesting to avoid it? Is is that dangerous etc? What other parts of Bristol should be avoided as well?

Basically, the downs - like most parks at night - can be dangerous if you walk about on your own. However, i've lived in Bristol for 19 years and i've never encountered anything dodgy there, so don't be too worried about it. As for places you shouldn't go, the only place Bristol students seem to go that has any significant problems is around Stokes Croft and the Gloucester Road.

Hope this helps

There is some rumour that goes along the lines that it's one of the only places in Britain where the rate of gay rape was higher than the rate of, er, 'normal' rape.

Whether this is true is questionable - but it's certainly a rather well-known spot for gay activity late at night.

I work opposite the downs and apparently it used to be a hub for gay dogging. However, the authorities have cracked down on it so there isnt much of that going on anymore. The downs and the clifton area are the nicest part of bristol in my opinion.

Nice choice of word there

You live in Weston and work in Bristol - I got out of there as soon as I could!

And as soon as the barrage is built - you'll be able to walk home! Enjoy uni!

You are encouraged not to walk across the downs alone late at night, but I haven't heard of anyone being raped or mugged there. It is very well lit and a massively student area so you should be fine. The issue with the downs is that it is a popular dogging spot, but as long as you don't flash your lights back at cars, you won't notice it.

Contrary to what History Lost in Physics says, I believe the Gloucester Road/ Stokes Croft area is actually pretty safe. It's seen as a poor and therefore down-and-out area but is actually a friendly and thriving community. The only real issues are fights between local gangs.

As a girl in Bristol I feel FAR more unsafe walking along Whiteladies Road after 8pm on friday and saturday nights. Its full of lairy ***** looking for fights and their whiny girlfriends wearing next to nothing. But again, they probably won't harrass you as they're too busy arguing amongst themselves. There were lots of sexual assaults around the Whiteladies/ Cotham Hill area last year, but supposedly it was one man and he was jailed.
