Whilst I'd say that is what the lecturer was probably aiming at, statins don't exactly cause massive derangement of LFTs as I said. Plus the chances of someone getting rhabdo and gallstones at one time from statins (or otherwise) are pretty darned slim

So Occam's razor would surely favour an infective cause (especially since I'd guess that viral hep would cause the picture), or alcoholism as both are far more prevalent than coincident statin-caused hepatobilliary and muscular disease

edit: though it's all rather a moot point, since real life isn't an episode of House - the likelihood is that Occam's razor wouldn't apply
I'm not sure if it is real life - it was a teaching case in a Biochem lecture (preparing for our practical exam) so could be tinkered with. The LFTs were WAY off though - both ALT and ALP around 3-400, which I doubt statins would do. CK was around 2000, IIRC. Also, it's a clinical biochem question, so it's more likely to be a metabolic/infective problem than because of other drugs...

"Excuse me mr lecturer, could you teach us the whole of [insert medical specialty here], going over every possible condition with particular attention paid to those which may come up in our exams. All in an hour. Please"

arrrrrrrrgh

BTW Dave, how's things? The new preston guys and gals seem cool, but it's wierd
I'm good thanks, hows shadowing? Is there a big influx of outsiders?

We know whether we're resitting or not by 4th June (well apart from the geeks who probably know on the 2nd as they have to know about going to the prize viva).

Is this like the guess the diagnosis thread? :p:

I'll go for 25 minutes.

Maybe there should be rep for the closest guess - not that I want to upset Renal by attracting numerous random rep whores into the thread.

Oh I see - I had missed the literary subtlety on skim reading.

Note to self - don't mess with Renal - not only is he blessed with acerbic wit - he also has the ability to induce cardiac arrest.
