I don't know, but when I booked mine I asked my instructor and she said to ignore it.

Its a registration number you need from your instructor.
Your instructor should give it to you if you ask him/her...

To be honest, mine said "you don't need it, it just informs the instructors company not to book any lessons when you book your test time..." and so I didn't fill in that box when booking (god its 3 weeks away aaaahhhh!)

It's not a big deal, it's just sort of their ID code. Just text/call your driving instructor and they'll happily tell you

It's the registration number of the instructor, but your examiner will make a note of it when you do the test. Don't worry about filling it in when it comes to the application, it's not needed.

Correct.

Although it's not a requirement on application, it is asked for so that a double booking is not made with another test made under the same instructor's ADI number. An instructor can set other preferences too, such as not allowing tests before or after a certain time, or on certain days of the week where the booking is made using the number.

So it's useful to have the number, but not strictly necessary. If you decide to book the test yourself and choose not to provide a number, you must check that your instructor's free to avoid disappointment later. That said, I don't know why instructors don't just book the bloody tests for people to avoid all these misunderstandings.
We book all our pupils test for the simple reason ,that if pupils book their own tests ,they CAN and sometimes DO give us the wrong date or time or Test Centre I have seen SO many Instructors and pupils turn up at the wrong test centre It gets pointed out to them by a Examiner and NORMALLY the Instructor says "I thought you said Mary that your test was at this centre at this time "
A GOOD Instructor demands to see ALL the booking details so this does NOT happen
Regarding the DSA ADI number .EVERY Instructor has an ADI number from when they 1st start out on an Instructor career .This number is theirs all the way through to retirement ,My ADI is just over 1100 from 1964 ,when registration first started
ALL Instructors can now put on the DSA "Find my Instructor " site their grade and let the DSA publish their pass rate 1000 wont !
