The Student Room Group

You can enter as a private candidate, but I do believe you'll have to phone around your local colleges/schools to see if they'll register you to sit the exams at their centre.

You won't have to be enrolled as a student, but you will have to be registered as a candidate sitting your exams at that centre.

When I was sitting my credit maths exam, there was a girl who was a private candidate or as SQA like to put it, an "external candidate". Spoke to her, she said she just gave the school a ring and they set it all up. This was at a private school mind you, don't know how welcoming state schools would be. Probably college would be your best bet.

Usually your local college will allow this.
Beware though, its costly.

Does anyone know how much it costs to be a external candidate and sit higher English?
