    None of the notes or tests I have looked up so far have dealt with the evolution of Hydrogen gas and the inference which can be made with it. Ive done a few past papers and its come quite often, here is one example;

    R is a colourless, viscous liquid that mixes with water in a very exothermic process. Complete the following inferences;

    Solution of R added to zinc metal - bubbles of gas evolved which gives a squeaky pop when ignited.

    The gas is....? Hydrogen
    Therefore R contains ....? (Would it be that it contains H+ ions)

    The BaCl2 test after this gives the inference, SO42- are present, so i guess H2SO4 would be a good guess for R - thats what i would have put in an exam anyway...

    Am I correct, what does the evolution of Hydrogen gas mean?

    The evolution of hydrogen is the formation of hydrogen gas as a product of a reaction.

    Oldak.

    I think that is understood. What is needed is what inferences can be made, and I can't remember off the top of my head, so I'm looking it up. I'll get back to you soon.

    Here we go, mark scheme time:

    Jan 2003 3B

    1.) (b)
    The gas is H2, not H

    R contains hydroxonium ions / H+ / H3O+ / hydrogen

    The ppt is Barium Sulphate / BaSO4
    R is H2SO4
