Changing course once you get to Durham.

Sorry to post in the current students thread, i thought I would get a better response and I might be a Durham student soon anyway. I have an offer in clearing from Durham but it isn't quite the right course for me. I was just wondering if it would be possible to change courses once I am at Durham? Would I have to have the A-level grades to meet the offer of that course?

If not, how about after the first year if I have done really well in my courses?

Thanks

I don't actually know so can't really help you.. anything I said would be purely speculation. Surely the best idea (and only way of getting an official answer) is to just email or phone the admissions tutor?

I have an offer for Biological Anthropology at the Queens Campus which isn't really where I want to be. I would like to change to a business or social sciences course. My dream was English but I know there is no chance of getting onto that course with my grades and how competitve it is at Durham.

So, once you arrive at Durham you want to change to another course on the other campus? After you've arrived? No chance.
You might get onto one of the stockton business courses though.

You may be able to change after your 1st year though. Someone I know has just changed from business accounting and finance at stockton to combined social sciences in durham city after their 1st year. =]

But if I tell them now that I am not totally up for this course I have been told they might start to worry and give my offer to someone else...:frown:

I'd be highly surprised if you got into Combined Social Sciences. They have a no transfer policy now, which is nothing to do with them - some people much higher up banned them from letting people transfer in because too many people were doing it every year and it became, guess what, an "admin issue". I guess if people want to do it, they need extra special circumstances.

To be fair though, even if changing courses is a possibility, changing campus does not sound as straightforward...Is there anything at Stockton you fancy? Maybe Psychology or something, which is apparently quite social sciency at Queens.

CSS was in extra this year though. So maybe they can afford to relax the rules a little?

Human sciences is sort of bio anthropology + social science, which could be really good for you. Otherwise business is taught at queen's campus too. Switching to human sciences wouldn't even mean changing depts, so may be feasible. =]
I think its possilbe , I think you do need to have met the requirements though in GCSE and A-level so I have been informed.

Ah that could be a problem. I might re-sit some exams as an external candidate when I get to Stockton at a college there as I only need to do a bit here and there to get AAA.

Why don't you ask Durham University ? Email them or something. They will tell you from the horses mouth.

Thanks for the warning. I know my chances are very slim. Also how bad is queens campus/stockton btw? I have heard conflicting things...one guy on here told me it was simply 'fail' but another said it is reasonable. Are nights out in newcastle and having an exciting student life still possible? I would have to find my own student housing as the colleges are full so I fear for what my social life will be like there :frown:

I am scared of getting my offer withdrawn. Atm they are holding it for me, but I have been told that if they get an idea that I am not totally committed to that course, then they might offer it to someone else. Apparently loads of others want my place so I don't want to appear ungrateful and risk losing my place altogether if you see what I mean.

surely if they've offered you a place they can't withdraw it?

and yeah, what other people have said. Unlikely.
