Could have been worse. Could have been better though. I fully expect to be in that 20% dropped ... :emo:

Hi  I'm applying to New College, for History.
Surprisingly, I'm not THAT nervous for the HAT, more so for the essay I have to send in...which I'm writing on the causes of the 1905 Russian Revolution, because it's the most relevant topic to what I'm currently studying at school (Russia, synoptic paper 1855-1964...). However we haven't got up to 1905 yet (currently just started Nicholas II), so I am having to do lots of reading in the next week or so to get myself up to scratch...then send it in. Do you know if we get told where/when to send it, or do we just contact the college directly? I also find it daunting that we've not TECHNICALLY had to register for the HAT...knowing my luck the paper won't appear at my school, haha, seeing as I'm the only one sitting it! :s-smilie:

Just thought I would say that I am extremely jealous of the Russian topic that you are studying as I love Russian history and have done since our GCSE course. Have you listened to Shostakovich's 11th symphony which is all about the 1905 revolution.
I'm expecting to be in the bottom 20% too :frown:

I am applying to Balliol, 12choc.
i think i did pretty **** in it
I kind of enjoyed it actually! I'm not sure if we're allowed to discuss the questions themselves but there was one part of the second source that nearly made me laugh in the exam :X

I enjoyed it too, it was a challenge though to go through all of it. Nevertheless it wasn't as bad as other 2 hour exams i've had to endure before now :P

I think I can guess which part too, because I found the whole of the second source just surreal :P

Wait, what was funny about the 2nd source?
I quite enjoyed it as well (despite feeling so stressed before taking it!). The first question went well for me; but the second I messed up a bit.

Hopefully I did well enough to get an interview. The fact I don't think I did disastrously and didn't find it ridiculously hard is probably a good sign!

Here's hoping I got in the top 75/80%

I'll drink to that! And calming my nerves...

I'm thinking it went well overall though, just hope my 1c wasnt as bad as I'd thought.

All I can say is; gutted for the prisoners D:

Like I said, I'm not sure if I can talk about specifics, but it involved a canoe. It just seemed a pretty funny sentence to my HAT-addled brain.
Did mine this morning and thought that it went as well as you can hope for an exam which isn't meant to be easy!!

I thought Question One was fine, especially with the summary section. I wrote something about decentralised localities only directed by centralised legal system. As part b there was lots to write and generally enjoyed it. C was good too as it fitted into what I have said for previous essays on my course, although I am a tad worried that I was close to regurgitating an A level essay :/

Question Two was good fun, I thought it was interesting that it had evidence of being a patriarchal society yet it seemed to be dominated by this very strong woman (although I wouldn't want to meet her down a dark alley!!)

I'm just glad it's over and done with now! Only the interviews to go and then we can do nothing else. Although, we find out if we got in on my birthday which is awful!

p.s. Of course we can talk specifics, it's over now! It's like our interviews, we are at complete liberty to discuss them as soon as ours are over, even if that means we are telling people who have not already done their interview!! Seems silly but nice :P

Yeah 1a +b were great but 1c was horrible for me because I wrote the essay badly :P I pretty much said the same thing for 1a, and the same case for 2. I wrote about how the men came first for ceremony and the women had to dance for approval to speak and then showed the contrast with the elder woman who directed her anger towards the men.

I'm hoping my Qn 2 will cover me for 1c :P

Gutted about your birthday! D:
Same pretty much! Well let's hope Keble loves me and takes me in... Not liking the sounds of those PPHs :/
Anybody here felt like they were running short on time? I know it was two hours, but i really didn't spend so much time on the second source. :s-smilie:
First source was fine. Not too difficult to go through. I just spent too much time trying to perfecting the first question, which made me spend much less time on the second one. Gah I'm worried if that's going to put me in the 20% :s-smilie: Being eliminated after the HAT would be hard to go through, i think :frown:

Good luck man!

I'm not really sure what to make of them, I don't really understand them either :P Rather just get halls and be done with it, but beggars can't be choosers I suppose

I finished with about 5 mins to go, so I took my time too but I know what you mean!

I'm really hoping I get a chance to go to interview and win back any favour I lost in the exam/on my essay :P Being eliminated at all would probably suck I think though

Too true!

Didn't think it was that bad though then again the 1c had 40 marks compared to 2's 30 so it's better you spent time on that rather than more on Q2!! Really Q2 was picking out lots of 'clever' points and making judgements on them so you didn't need to spend too long on it!

Don't fret, the fail mark is 40% and they often call people to interview even if they got less than that!
Average marks are between 45-60%, just like degrees I suppose :P
what else did everyone write for 1a? reading some responses have made me a bit worried...

Something about the author arguing one point about devolved powers but that central government still has the ultimate power to punish or remove those who abuse their freedom?

I can't remember the exact words, but it was better than that
The government of the localities was decentralised to the office of the local officals however they were restricted by the centralised system of the law.

There abouts i think :P can't remember in full
