If the cap cost €0.10, then the bottle cost €1 more than €0.10, i.e. the bottle cost €1.10, bringing the total up to €1.20.

Sorry to scare you by bringing a letter into it, but: if the cap cost x, and the bottle cost (1 + x), then in total they cost 1 + x + x (i.e. 1 + 2x), which should be equal to 1.10. So x = 0.05.

0.05 + 1.05 = 1.10
0.10 + 1.10 = 1.20

So the cap must have cost £0.05 because if the bottle cost £1 more than the cap it must have cost £1.05 because that's £1 more! I can't do euro signs but I am happy now Marion, thank you. And yes, let's bake.

Billy knows how much maths hates me and how this actually does confuse me. :p:

Au contrare! i came to exactly the same conclusion as you, and even with people explaining it, i still don't understand. maths is not for me.
because €1.00 is not €1 more than €0.10

€1.05 is €1 more than €0.05

and €1.05 + €0.05 = €1.10
