I'm going to be applying this year to study Medicine at Cambridge and I'm pretty much decided on Sidney. I was at the open day in April and really enjoyed it - could anyone tell me more about the college and in particular what it's like being a medic there? Perhaps offer any advice?

Cheers x

'Now fill your glasses up, my friends, up to the very brink,
"Success to Sidney College" is a toast that all must drink.
Three (four) hundred years have passed away, but Sidney yet is young:
We're growing, and we mean to grow, for Centuries to come!'
(E H Griffiths, 'A Song of Sidney Sussex', 1900)

All together now.......

I'm a first year linguist at Sidney, but I have several medic friends so I'll see if I can get them to post on here or something.

The college is quite small, but really friendly, everything you read about it in the prospectus is true; fosters real inclusion or something like that. most people know most people, which can be bad for rumours/gossip, but at the same time you don't have to throw yourself into the centre of everything and make yourself a target. the medics here are great, they do have a lot of work but seem to balance it well, they aren't all recluses!

we have an amazing senior tutor, he's the nicest guy in the world; he threatened to pull us out of the library if he saw we'd been in there for too long, and make us coffee or something hehe. we have good formal hall, general hall food can be quite variable though.

um what else- good student accomodation-it's not the plushest in the world but it's cheaper and fairly decent. we do kinda take it for granted just how close we are to everything, being slap bang in the centre of town is sooooo useful, people will envy you for it. the medic dept isn't far away either, like a ten min walk or something?

any other questions? ticki, who sometimes posts on here, is also a sidneyite, so feel free to ask her stuff too!

Hey, I've been at Sidney for two years now and know quite a bit about it because I help with all the access stuff, was on the JCR etc. My wonderful next-door neighbour Priya has done a very good job of giving you the details. If you have any specific questions PM one of us (Priya's exams are over but mine aren't over until Monday).

I've got quite a few friends outside of college, and from what I can tell we are comparatively bad for food and accommodation. We are very good for welfare provision. The medics work very hard, but I can't think of anything in particular which would make their experience at Sidney much different from the medic experience at any other college. A girl from my school is coming up to read Medicine in October so if you want up to date admissions information (what to expect, etc) then I can ask her to tell me a bit more. Otherwise there's the Oxbridge admissions site which has profiles about people's applications, including their interviews, and which is pretty good in terms of giving you an idea of what to expect.
