The Good Pub Guide (Canterbury)

Hey all you Kent freshers!! So the new term is about to begin and you may currently find yourself a little preoccupied with paperwork/enrollment/accommodation etc. But leaving all that aside for the moment, it's time to concentrate on the more important things in life...like deciding which pub to make you're local in Canterbury. After all, you can get a Degree anytime, and there's always resits...

So without further ado, may I present to you:

 The Good Pub Guide (Canterbury)

 :jumphug: :danceboy: :puke:

 THE UNICORN

Situated by the level crossing, and within easy staggering distance of the local chippy is The Unicorn. An old, traditional english pub with a host of regulars, nostalgic paraphernalia and a friendly landlord, this is truly the place to be. They serve a good range of ales (such as Shephard Neame's Master Brew) and ice cold lagers as well. This is one of my personal favourites.

 THE CRICKETERS

A friendly family-run pub nestled in the heart of Canterbury highstreet, this is truly a little patch of heaven. They serve a great range of ales and have live music every now and again...although lager drinkers may be disappointed as this is one for the ale lovers. :yep:
It's a little pricey as well, so a weekly visit at the most would be advisable.

 THE MONUMENT

Affectionately named 'The animal pub' by my buddy because of its resident shaggy dog, cat and kitten, this is really a nice place to visit for a quiet uni night out. A third of the way from campus, this is a cool little pub that plays host to a large range of sporting events. The ales are top, as are the lagers, although like The Cricketers, it's only downfall is that it's a little pricey.

 THE BUTTERMARKET

Located in the square opposite the cathedral is The Buttermarket. Similar in decor to The Unicorn, The Buttermarket has a good range of guest ales (from Shephard Neame's Spitfire to the Ginger Tosser) and is also really great for grub. The Game pie is awesome!!

:danceboy: ALBERRY'S :danceboy:

If over-priced cocktail pitchers is your thing, then this is the place to be. It's a little out of the way from most of the other clubs/pubs, and has a basement dancefloor filled with forty-somethings pretending to be twenty...but Wipeout Wednesdays can be pretty good fun. :yep:

:puke: WETHERSPOONS (WESTGATE) :puke:

Want a cheap night out? Then Spoons is the place to be!! It's the main student hangout aside from the campus bars, and you can always get cheap bevvies and grub. I've had ales in here from as little as 99p!!
It's also not too far from Munchies, the best fast food joint in Canterbury!! Try the chips, cheese and beans!!

:jumphug: WETHERSPOONS (THE OTHER ONE) :jumphug:

Once you've negotiated your way past the homeless guys begging for your hard-earned beer money, this Spoons is, in my opinion, much better than the Westgate one. It's near the bus station and has a very, VERY long bar.
It's also potentially a good place to pick up drunk chicks.

:danceboy: THE CUBAN :danceboy:

When the rest of Canterbury is closing down for the night around 11pm-12am, The Cuban is one of the only places that remains open. It's ridiculously over-priced, and the chicks are as snotty as hell, but it has a nice garden area and like I said, it's one of the only places that stays open after 12!!

Where's that? A friend from my hometown told me about it, and she doesn't even live/study in Canterbury!!! Although it's possible I've been in there but didn't catch the name on account of being bladdered.

Yeah, although I did add Alberry's and The Cuban, and they're not really pubs in the traditional sense. But they're good on account of the fact that they actually stay open past midnight!!

Oh!! I forgot The Miller's Arms...awesome pub...great ales!!!

Yeh you say this but... WE BOTH KNOW WE'RE GOING BACK THERE FOR THE OBSCURE 80s MUSIC AND THE LUDICROUSLY EXPENSIVE PITCHERS! You were absolutely loving it and you know it!:yep: This time I'm not bringing my laptop though! Fear not though TSR-ers, it was still there when I ran back half an hour later to retrieve it when I realised I'd left it there (long story behind why I brought it in there in the first place).

In other news, you didn't mention the campus bars which, while everyone seems to think they're really naff, ARE the cheapest places in town... and Rutherford Bar has board games! They don't have Khet though... that's aaaaaaaaaaaall mine! Mwahahaha

What about Bramleys. Relatively expensive, but has Asahi, Hoegaarden and Oranjeboom on tap (and has awesome wallpaper in the toilets).

Also, if you're into the ales and ciders (or just want another group of people to hang with) look into joining the Real Ale and Cider society.

Don't be put off by the name though, none of us really care what you order as long as you're not a dick.

The Dolphin is quite good too. Meade. :coma:

Need a recommendation for a Cantebury pub that shows the football? Are their any pubs with the dodgy boxes so they show the Saturday 3 o clocks? What pub has the best atmosphere? Any supporter pubs (take it they will be Chelsea ones)?

Reply 13

The Unicorn is by far the best; full of crusty old regulars and the occasional old guy who talks to you about random things. Oh and I lol'd at "The Animal Pub".

While Woodys is more of a pub-trying-to-be-a-bar they will put basically any sports channel you ask for on. My housemates went down there consistently every day for a week during the Britain's Got Talent semi-finals and finals were on and no one minded them asking for ITV or whatever channel that's on.

Drawback of Woody's - if you're not in Parkwood it's a bit of a walk (but then contrast that with walking all the way up and down that hill from campus), also there aren't any fancy ales aside from Old Speckled Hen... though my knowledge of those drinks is a bit ropey as I'm a spirits person.

Hopefully i'll be able to find a nice cold Heineken

Do any of the pubs in Canterbury serve Staropramen?
I've had a fetish for it ever since I visited Prague.

I'm an old fart and like my ales though, that's why I didn't list 'em!! Although of all the campus bars I think Woody's is probably about the best.
