THe pencil is accelerating forwards...since f=ma...a force is needed...this comes from the back of the shelf pushing forwards...when at the front of the shelf the pencil is decelerating...again F=ma...it needs a force...this comes from the front of the shelf pushing backwards....this Q isnt about inertia...and a mark for clarity hehe :smile:

its all down to conservation of momentum, and the fact that the pencil doesnt have breaks to stop at the same time as the car, it need a force to help it decelerate or accelerate.. as mackin boi mentioned.

issit ok if you paste the direct download link because i downloaded "selected numerical answers" they are indeed selected answers and not the full answers.
