That's really amazing, you're so lucky! Have a good time  So when you're flying out to Chicago I'll be driving up to Newcastle...think of me and the horribly long drive ahead whilst you're jet-setting

EDIT - Mostly prepared, just can't be arsed with the final packing bits. I've got bored of packing, I just want to go now!

I love that musical and Hollywood's take on it too :yep:
But if I had to choose an American town to visti, I think I'd settle for Boston. Still, congratulations, Jess

Well you'll be having fun at freshers' week whilst I'm recovering from jet lag if that's any consolation :p:

Yeah, I'm starting to worry about the lack of sleep  On the one hand, I'll be too tired to stay awake throughout it all, but on the other hand, if I sleep, surely I'll miss something. :frown:

Boston looks cool, but I am tied by where the person going with me wants to go and part of his business is in Chicago so there are people to drive us round for free :woo:

Yes, I did get this entire trip for free :ninja:

Yep :awesome: I feel slightly spoilt but it also feels good :woo: Well I don't suppose it's entirely free, my company is clearly enough :h:

Twinned with birmingham? Rochdale is twinned with some random french town, that's unfair :frown:

I love that everyone started talking about films last night. :h:

You could download Handbrake - all you need to do is then put in a DVD, follow the simple instructions and you'll have it on your laptop in no time.

Yeah, Citizen Kane really is a classic. It is in black and white though which seems to put a lot of people off.

I love Forrest Gump! That came out in the same year as Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction - a very good year for films. I got a Tom Hanks boxset a while back with Forrest Gump, Castaway, Catch me if you Can, Saving Private Ryan and The Terminal in for £10, such a bargain.

Revolutionary Road is quite good, very well acted. Be warned, it's incredibly depressing though.

Cloverfield is just a fantastic film. It's got a pretty generic plot, but it incorporates so many original and genre-defying ideas into it that it becomes something truly unique, and a joy to behold. It's all filmed from one camcorder, so you see it through the cameraman's eyes, complete with all of it's faults like bad camerawork and jumping frames etc. It's also filmed mostly in real-time, and while I guess you could say some of these ideas first came from the Blair Witch Project, that was never really mainstream. It also never truly explains things - you know as much as the character, and aside from what you learn as you go, you are really disoriented, which is just so refreshing in the current vogue where everything (even ******* superheroes, for christ's sake!) has to have a backstory. It also is laden with so much political and historical subtext that for a mainstream blockbuster it is surprisingly deep, but it never forces that on you - you can completely ignore it if you want. And the CG is the best I have ever seen, it's so seamless. I'd say that in terms of how revolutionary it could be, it's one of my favourite films, I like it that much.

I heard there's plans to make a sequel though, which is terrible news. :colonhash: If they make an origins story as well, this will be the biggest ruining of anything since the Matrix.

oooh thank you! i might try that today-i get LOTR cravings at times. in fact...maybe i'll watch that over lunch. after scrubs finishes
i like black and white films  i was watching roman holiday the other day, and it's such a lovely film. i don't think the fact that it's not in colour detracts from it in the slightest! £10?! that's crazy! i always wanted to see the terminal-it looked alright.
haha you make it sound very appealing! i don't think i know anyone who actually went to see it when it came out so i've not heard any other opinions on it.
sequels are ALWAYS rubbish. disney sequels especially. rrrr.

I've been to Miami for a week, which was very cool. I only really want to go to New York in America now, I'm not really that into visiting the USA.

Yeah, there's always matinees for you to catch up on etc.

In all seriousness, have a great time!

There's a tiny village near me that sent loads of twinning places off to really big cities, including the postscript "failure to respond means we shall take it that you are happy to be twinned with us". Their sign now reads "Twinned with Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Barcelona, Milan and New York". :awesome:

Thanks :awesome:

And  at the twinning, that's a good idea. I wonder if I could twin my house with the likes of Milan or Rome.

My friend wants to go New Your just for shopping  Though I would rather visit bits of Europe , the Old World cities :moon: Starting with Vienna, Budapest and Prague :p:
This village reminds me of tiny American cities that insist on calling themselves after European cities- Versailles, paris, Milan < St Petersburg :p:

You're welcome. It's a very good piece of software, so if you have any problems with it just ask me. It can take a while for it to rip a film (especially if you have an old computer), so you might want to set it up to rip it during the night when you don't want to use your computer.

Yeah, it's a shame how some people are put off by black and white, much like people are put off by foreign language films. There's so many great examples of both.

I got it from play.com, and having just looked it's currently on sale for £10 still. :awesome: I really like the Terminal actually, it's a bit soppy but it's very well acted and it's just a nice heart-warming tale.

Haha, I do think it's fantastic. :colondollar: The first time I watched it I was just blown away by it.

Sequels aren't always bad - The Lord of the Rings, Godfather II, the Bourne Films, Kill Bill Vol. 2 (Although that doesn't really count as a sequel), The original two Indiana Jones, the third Mission Impossible...

More often than not they're just dreadful though. It's much easier to ruin a franchise than it is to improve on it. It also really pisses me off when film studios make a sequel purely to make money on it, when there's no real need to tell one or ideas for it. Take the third Pirates of the Caribbean for example - in the grand scheme of things, that film brings absolutely nothing to the table in terms of plot. All that it actually achieves is setting up a fourth film.

And if they do ever make a sequel to Cloverfield, it will just be a completely cynical, money-grabbing pile of crap that will detract a lot of what's good about the first.
