Hello all

I was wondering what most people here think about "The Merchant Of Venice" film adaptation with Al Pacino.

I felt that the Shakespearean dialogue was beatifully expressed by all of the actors especially that of Al Pacino as Shylock. The "Hath a Jew Not Eyes" section was particularly brilliant. The music too, wonderfully depicted Rennaissance Venice as did the scenes of Venice. This is a short review, but all in all, the film was and remains an excellent rendition of William Shakespeare's Masterpiece.

Hi, I really enjoy reading Shakespeare. Unfortunately, I've not had the chance to watch any of his plays. My special interest is in his sonnets. Hope to have some interesting discussions about Shakespeare with you guys.

Does anyone here think it's important for Shakespeare's comedies to actually be funny? We had a discussion about it today in a seminar and it was quite interesting - half the people in there found the comedies funny (especially some of the puns and stuff in Twelfth Night) while other people said that they didn't find them funny at all - the only thing that made them 'comedies' were that they stuck to the conventions of Elizabethan comedy (light hearted tone, marriage at the end of the play etc). But obviously the idea of what is 'funny' has changed as we're now looking at the plays from a modern viewpoint.

What does everyone else think?
