Dr Martens and New Rocks

I've wanted a pair of each for years and since the cold, wet weather will be coming up soon and my other boots are leaking I've decided to indulge myself in buying one or the other (possibly both if I'm feeling very greedy:p: ). I had a couple of questions though before I buy.

I know Dr Martens are good quality and last for years as I've heard lots of people say this. With the New Rocks, I know very little about them in this department. So are they good quality? It seems an awful lot of money to spend if they're just going to fall to pieces in a year.

I appreciate both brands of boot take a long time to wear in and can be quite painful so am not worried about that.

Also, what could you wear DMs and NRs with? I'm not a goth or wannabe goth or anything similar so I'd like some ideas for what to wear with these that wouldn't look ridiculous or too dark.

Please no haters saying they're vile or anything about the stereotypes they are connected with. I know and I like them anyway so all it will do if clutter the thread.

Thanks very much for reading and any information.

I have new rocks. Bought them in November 2004. Admittedly I haven't had much opportunity to wear them since - I've maybe only worn them about 7 or so times in total.

They're very good quality though - even if I'd worn them a lot more I'd be VERY very surprised if they fell apart within a year.

I <3 my new rocks I wish I had more places to go to so that I could wear them more. I wasn't expecting to fall pregnant 2 months after buying them though lol.

Muh new rocks :

Spoiler

(and for the record I think new rocks look better than dms, but it's personal preference)

I've had both and wear both currently.
New Rocks are heavy, very gothy and DO create some stigma - people WILL assume you're a goth if you so much as look at a pair. If that doesn't bother you then it's all good.
New Rocks are NOT good quality at all and all the pairs I've had 4/5 over the years, have all come apart after around 2 years. Metal bits (that aren't actually metal, but resin) fall off etc.
Again, if that fact doesn't bother you, go for it!

DM's however, are one of the best investments you'll ever buy. They will last you at least 10 years, some people have them for 30+. There's a whole lot more choice when it comes to DM's - I've just bought my 27 year old sister a pair of pink flocked DM Mary Janes for her birthday. She's what I call a 'chav' so that says something about DMs and their versatility.

I love DM's above NR's. I used to love my NR's more, but that was when I was more gothy (never been the black lipstick velvet and lace type goth though) so now my DM's are a good inbetweener and look far less 'cliche' imo.

DMs are pretty much indestructable, and can be worked with anything.

New Rocks are expensive, poor quality, look stupid, and as mentioned will make you look like a bit like 14 year old goth.

Not bothered about the stigma/being called a goth because I just like the look of them and don't really care what other people think about my clothes but the fact that New Rocks fall apart after two years is a little worrying considering how expensive they are. I didn't realise that the "metal" bits were actually resin either. :s-smilie: Makes them sound very cheaply made. Thanks for that, very valuable information. I think I'll go with the DMs then. Dunno what colour though. I'll have to have a think about that now.

Question still remains is what to wear with them really but if they are as versatile as has been suggested then I guess that doesn't matter.

Thanks a lot for the replies so far, guys.

I used to wear NR's with mini skirts, tights and whatever top.

These days I wear my NRs and DMs with acid wash skinny jeans tucked in. Or with black leggings and a long oversized tee or tunic/longline vest top. Or dresses. I wear my DM's with everything - 90% of my wardrobe is All Saints, so that sorta gives you an idea of how I wear my boots.

i got a pair of black patent dm's last year and love them. Perfect in the snow and very fashionable now! Look cute with little dresses and leggins tucked in too. Plus, they weren't even that hard to wear it, i didn't have any problems with them

They can be hot :coma:

I've got New Rocks. I don't really wear them anymore, but they're alright with skinny jeans tucked in, and skirts.

I can't even look at my DMs without getting blisters on my ankles... I've got two pairs which I just can't break in, even though I've had them for 5+ years.
Bought a pair of New Rocks about 4 years ago, 2nd hand on eBay. They're chunky purple boots with a 3 inch platform (they've got 3 holes through the platform with springs in) and I've worn them to at least 200 gigs (in the mosh pit mostly) in the time I've had them. Not even a hint of falling apart.
Some of the newer ones look a bit fragile though...

I've got Darcie DM's and even though I usually hate heels, they are actually really comfy and I've been wearing them pretty much non-stop since results day. They seem pretty indestructable too

I've also got some New Rocks, which I've had for two years. They are pretty heavy (not so fun walking up 3 flights of stairs to get to my form room every morning ), but I still wore them all winter and they're still in great condition - I even wore them to my interviews at Oxford!

For both the DM's and New Rocks, I wear them with a huge variety of stuff - I have some more "gothic" clothes, but I've also been wearing girly summery dresses with the DM's this summer, and skirts/shorts/dresses with the New Rocks. I got some of the girlier New Rocks (cant find a picture, but they kinda remind me of riding boots with laces up the front but a solid metal heel), so I think they go with skinny jeans or girlier skirts

Only thing I would say with the New Rocks is living in a smaller town full of old people, I do tend to get odd looks

edit: these are the ones I have:

Honestly, a decent pair of 'walking shoes' will do you just as good for a fraction of the cost. Their a little more hide-able too.

One thing I will warn you, buy some good pairs of thick walking socks, the type which are basically 2 socks sewn together. They make boots the most comfy thing ever that and when they get wet, even waterproof ones get cold (even though the water doesnt get to your feet)

Put them on, have a shower and sleep in them. By morning they'll be fitted to your feet and give you no trouble at all. I did that for my last pair and the next day I spent 10 hours in them without blisters  Really you should be peeing in them but I doubt anyone wants to go that far!

OP: both are hardwearing. I've had a pair of DMs for 11 years and I still love them. I have a pink pair that are heavenly and so incredibly soft and I have several more boots, sandles, dolly shoes and a nice new pair of red shoes. I love them all to pieces. They're so well made and I really don't like buying other types of shoes at all.

I do have a pair of New Rocks and I love them too. I've had issues with bits falling off (I did wear them to death over about 4 years) but other than that they've been perfect! Really comfy and warm in the winter and I still wear them. Particularly useful in moshpits

Both of them look good with demin skirts or jeans. Keep it casual and it won't be overly 'gothy'.

amazon has some for £36 at the moment. Bit limited in the colours though, at least in my size :p:

I'll pee while wearing them, but that's where I draw the line! No wonder punks smell so bad!!

I need to buy some extra-thick ski socks to wear with them as well.

My New Rocks are stupidly comfortable though, and because they weigh a lot, you can feel your thighs getting toned, especially when you're running up the escalators at Waterloo for the last train!!

I had calf muscles to die for when they were the only boots I had in my student flat! My legs were solid. New Rocks are awesome for legs

I have a pair of plain black Doc Martens, got them last December, and honestly, I lvoe them ot pieces..I pair them with skinny jeans, black skinny jeans..and ost of the time dresses/skirts (with tights of course!) and I love them, they hurt like a BITCH to break in but they were well worth their money, and I know I'll have them for years to come!

I want a coloured or a floral pair now, hehe.

I have new rocks and love them to bits. well worth the money.
http://www.newrockstore.com/zona3/2008/product_info.php?products_id=283 these are my pair.

Ive worn them as many times as I can get away with it, and theyve been fine. If not wanting to look overly gothy wear them with jeans or a knee length skirt

and they are the best fitting, most comfy shoes I own
