Uh, yes you can

so doctors just give them out willy nilly do they?

you can definately get pills to delay your period, not so sure about inducing it though

You can supposedly induce periods, but as the methods seem to involve things like drinking fruit tea I'm not convinced of their accuracy.

And you can get tablets that delay your period. You need to take 3 a day for every day that you don't want your period. You get those from your doctor.

so you really can get them? my doc told me there was no such thing

Before I was on the pill I was going on a school ecology field trip which meant i would be in the woods for long periods of time without access to toilets, my gp just gave me some tablets to take everyday until i got back to delay it. But a friend on the same trip with the same problem but different dr got given the pill.

You just have to go and tell them you're going on holiday and want to stop it, and they'll give you like a 10 day supply or something. So, yes they do basically.

Your doctor might not have known, not wanted to give you them, or thought you were just talking about The Pill.

I think it depends how sympathetic your doctor is.

I went on holiday when I was about 15 and wanted to delay my period (Greek toilets + period = bad combination). I went to my GP with my mum and he gave me a month's supply of Microgynon. However, because I wasn't used to taking it, I kept forgetting and basically had a two-week light period. Not worth it at all.

But, in answer to your question, some GPs will put you on the pill for that reason.

That's your own fault though, not the pills'.

if you explain everything properly your doctor will just put you on something called norethisterone. you start it 3 days before you period is due and keep taking it until a day or two before you are ready for your period to come. i had to use it last year before i went on the pill, but just to warn you, it can mean you have SUCH bad period pain once you stop taking them.

the easiest way to make your period start early would be to go on the pill and not take the full pack. but that obviously will only work if you aren't going away any time soon as you'll need a month or so to be able to do it.
my mate just went on it cause she didn't want to have a period on holiday
it was only tablet for when she was there
and she came on when she got back

Doctors are completely used to giving people pills of some kind to delay their periods. I've done it about 4 times, for various camping/sailing things where it would just be annoying. You don't need to make up an elaborate reason, just tell them that you want to delay it for however many days.
I've never had bad pains after it, and because I remembered to take them regularly there was no issue at all.

Depending on how long you're going for, they might be reluctant (10 days is the most I've taken them), but the period doesn't start until about 2/3 days after stopping taking the tablets, so that's halpful.

I've been given different types each time, for some reason, but recently I've used "Norethisterone" and before that "Dydrogesterone". You could just ask directly for those, to prompt doctor. Maybe also see someone else who actually remembers their medical training?!

On a different note: couldn't you just have the period and deal with it? Unless you're in swimming costumes all day or camping or whatever, couldn't you just use tampons? Just a thought...

Hope it all gets sorted.

I had them when I was in year 9 so I can't remember my period after being particually painful or anything :-)
