The corpse was discovered on Sunday night stuffed into a wall cavity used to carry wiring and utilities in the Connecticut university's molecular biology lab.

Wife-to-be Annie Le, 24, has been the subject of a massive search after she disappeared five days ago.

The building where the body was found is in Yale's medical complex, about a mile from the main campus.

New Haven assistant police chief Peter Reichard said officers also recovered "a large amount" of physical evidence.

Surveillance tapes show that Ms Le was last seen entering the building on Tuesday.

Roughly three hours later, a fire alarm sounded, and the research facility was quickly evacuated.

But there is no record of Ms Le leaving the building, based on footage from some 75 security cameras stationed around the facility.

Ms Le's ID, money, credit cards, and purse were found in her office.

Ms Le, a pharmacology doctoral student from California, was due to marry Columbia University graduate Jonathan Widawsky on Sunday.
