What would be an explanation for the level of oxygen being higher in inspired air than levels of oxygen in alveolar air?

It is a two mark exam question and I am unsure of how to answer it, any help would be appreciated.

in the alveolar the tiny air sacs in the lungs the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place, so you would guess when you exhale you are more less removing all that air, be it oxygen or CO2, or other gases, you need to exhale in order to inhale

Not all of the O2 will diffuse across the plasma membrane of the alveoli - on is that too obvious?

When you inhale, oxygen passes down your trachea and bronchioles before it reaches the alveoli. Not all of the oxygen will reach the alveoli before you exhale--some of the oxygen will be removed in exhaled air before it has a chance to reach the alveoli. Consequently, inhaled air has more oxygen than the air which reaches the alveoli.
