Is psychology a good degree

is it respected?
its what im doing, but i just hope its worthwhile. its a Bsc which is good..but i dont want it be regarded as mickey mouse degree just because its not a traditional science. what do you think its better than??
is it better or worse than history and english degrees?

i dont think the alevel was that easy to be honest. though it was a bit of memory test rather than intelligence or any skill. you had to remember alot, but if you did bother to learn it, then it was easy to do well.

Psychology, to be honest, isn't well respected. There's a general perception that it's a bit of a mickey mouse subject. That said, there are plenty of jobs where psychology would be useful, so don't let what other people think put you off doing a subject that you want to study. If you really want to study it - then study it!

In comparison to English or History, it is certainly less well respected, though, but as was highlighted in a recent thread even degrees like Golf Management and Equestrian Studies can land you with a pretty decent job and a nice pay packet, so the days where a subject's reputation were important are long over.

Uni shouldn't be about "Omg is this subject respected." Do what you need for your future.

Meh, average.
I agree with Rucklo.

But to be honest my experiences of actually studying degree level psychology is that it isnt really respected.

It, by most people isnt respected as a science primarily and Ive found that alot of people dont even know what psychology is and just make assuptions about it. For some reason alot of people assume that youre doing some kind of strange degree when you learn to read minds or something. Most peoples understanding or knowledge of psychology doesnt extend beyond Freud, so thats what you have to contend with really.

It doesnt really matter though to be honest, if its necessary for your career, or will assist you in your career then do it.

University isnt like school though, so if youre thinking about studying something just because its respected I wouldnt bother, as you probably wont make it past the first year unless you have some genuine interest, or atleast a good level of knowledge.

If you want to work in Psychology then it's the way to go.

In my experience it's only people who are doing such things like maths and physics, or other really traditional subjects that think it's a micky mouse degree...

It's useful in a full range of diffrent careers, and has openings to all sorts of different paths.

TBH, I don't think you're really going to get on with it if you're not sure it's the one you want to take, or you're worrying about what people think of it.
i think it's a great degree! I know i would certainly look up to a psychologist! its a cool subject!
It's certainly becoming more respected as people realise that the discipline has essentially abandoned all non-scientific persuits.

Generally, it is those who don't know anything about the subject that don't respect it.

My degree - Economics - is by far the best. Do that. Or Maths

ie. most grad employers

fail.

I guess any degree at RHUL fails tho
Psychology is a respected degree, if you're going to actually be working in that field. It certainly isn't a mickey mouse subject, although the way it was taught at A Level wasn't the best.

As far as prospects, well look here: http://www.prospects.ac.uk/cms/ShowPage/Home_page/What_do_graduates_do_/charts_and_tables_page/p!eefffpL?subject_id=27

You wouldn't be applying to a job that has no generally correct view of Psychology if you graduate with a psychology degree though, really.

No, people only ever do jobs which are directly relevant to their degree.

Generally correct view, which isn't hard at all. That is to say, you don't think that psychology is about reading minds and teaching animals to talk. I meant to say that at grad stage, the people you apply to would be more knowledgeable about such things, no matter where you go, not that you would only be applying to be a psychologist.

I mean to say that hopefully you wouldn't be applying to be a cook or something...

And with psychology you could end up pretty much anywhere, it's very wide.

It's not the best....

yeah but the thing is, psychology post grad does actually lead to becoming a psychologist, and that is a respected career. psychologists earn loads.
i know its not as good as medicine, engineering , sciences....but is it better than tv and radio studies? media? wildlife conservation? zoology?

If you need to ask that then it's clearly not the degree for you.

Nitpicking, but I don't think Zoology should be on the same list as "Radio Studies". My sister did it, AFAIK it's just a branch of Biology...which itself is of course well respected.

Psychologists earn loads? That's news to me. They earn a good wage for the amount of time spent in education. Lots of people don't actually become psychologists after they graduate though.

Does it really matter about the reputation?

Considering it's not really an indicator of intelligence and ability to do well in life.
