Hi all,

The legal age for sex is 16, right? But the legal age to watch sex or porn is 18. is it just me or do others see the loop hole in the law. I mean fair enough for the really hardcore stuff. Don't you think that the legal age to watch porn should be 16, hardcore at 18 and sex at 16 or both sex and porn at 18? Surely bringing life into the world has a much bigger consequence than wacthing porn?

I would appreciate your views on the matter.

Porn gives the wrong impression to young people of the meaning of sex and the way the human body should look (large breasts, big penises etc). I think it's right how the law is currently, but with the internet and free access to porn without any chance of being caught, the law is pretty redundant.

I think the two should be equalised. It's just a bit stupid that you can do it, and you can watch it in person, but you can't watch it after it's been recorded. Although I agree that you should have to be 18 to star in porn. That said, porn involving 16 and 17 year olds should be treated distinctly different from child porn. Maybe even to the point of it only being illegal to distribute.

I think it should be:
Legal age for having sex - 16
Legal age to watch porn - 16
legal age to watch hardcore porn - 18
Legal age to be in a porn film - 18.

Name one guy/boy who has gone onto a porn site but then clicked 'leave' or 'I am under 18' when it says you have to be 18 to enter.

Exactly.

I don't see any parents getting fines or children getting official warnings for going on a porn site. The law may as well be axed as it is redundant. In fact it has been in a way, it is currently legal for minors to buy DVDs and videos of porn.

Thanks to Conservatives bumbling and not getting the law approved by the EU, the law no longer exists until it is done properly in a month or two.

Still not heard of any kids trying to take advantage of it yet though.

Not advocating law-breaking, just stating the facts. It's like one ofthose old laws that still exist but isn't practised. Y'know, the kind that are like "you may not carry pork in London unless the sun is down and you are wearing a top hat".

EDIT: Oh and I wouldn't change the sexual age limit. In an ideal world I'd up it to 21, in the real world I would've considered 18, but when kids as young as 12 are having regular sex, upping the age 2 years isn't going to stop them.

Only way for there to be less teen pregnancies and underage sex is to bring sex education into schools to replace the Sex Education currently in schools. Also known as Learning Things Which Are Irrelevant To My Gender, Being Fed Incorrect Information And Not Bring Told Important Facts About STDs Education.

But even if the education was fixed, I can't help but think girls would still be a mother by the age of 18 and married by the age of 22 just like they are in the current generation. Because babies create happiness and a ring solves a relationship break-up.

It's ridiculous.

Its all very well saying 16/18 for different types of porn, but there's a huge grey area between them isnt there? Who has the job of watching all this porn to decide what rating it will get when mostly its just clips on the internet. Sex at 16 is right, its the age people start exploring that side of themselves, nothing wrong with that. But the law is saying to watch and be in porn you need to be an adult, and I see nothing wrong with that.

It should be pointed out that hardcore porn is now illegal in the UK. For example acted raped, threats to the genitals (like pretending to kick them off or something I suppose) etc. is against the law.

Plus Simpsons porn, whilst hilarious, is usually taken seriously as paedophilia when it involves Lisa or Bart.

So regarding an age limit on porn or hardcore porn, I suggest the legal system sorts itself out logically with internet porn before trying to enforce such law on others.

Until then, other countries will continue to point and laugh at our latest new internet porn law, whatever that turns out to be (I predict 'any persons' computer found with videos of a dominatrix whipping a guy will be punished with a minimum of 5 years imprisonment').

Increasing the flow of porn by legalising it at 16 is not a good idea IMO. You'll also have to revise the whole BBFC ratings system. Unnecessary IMO. Anyway, you can't stop horny teenagers.

I agree with whoever above posted how would you define "hardcore porn". Yes involving rape or violence is clearly "hardcore" but surely it's not quite so simple- what if these things are implied but not explicitly shown? Anyway, as many have mentioned because of the internet these days, not being 18 doesn't stop teenagers watching porn in the same way that not being 16 doesn't stop teenagers (and children) having sex therefore I don't think changing the law and equalizing it out if you like would make any difference at all.

Porn definitely should not be legal before sex is legal. This gives young people a completely warped unrealistic view on what sex is and can be dangerous. In my opinion hardcore (ridiculous unrealistic) porn should be made legal AFTER sex itself given it's very bad to get these ideas into young peoples head at the same time as sex is also being introduced into their lives. It's better for people to know the realistic way to do all of that before being introduced to all that extra stuff (that way they're mature enough to understand that it's unrealistic)
