Shouldn't you have received your NI number when you were 16?! :s-smilie:
You should have got you NI automatically when you are 16 so I would make sure to get on their ass fast, if you weren't in the country or so then you must make sure you are still eligible, but if they say its all cool just chill, after all stressing wont help, I am yet to receive my student loan but as always im just chilling as I know it will be fine. it always is in the end

I got a letter saying my student loan was approved last week, but so far my payments are blocked (because of the lack of a NI number? I never recieved it)

So I called up Jobcentre Plus and they said don't worry about it and Student finance will contact them and they will notify me with a NI number.

Is this what usually happens?

I wouldn't trust SFE to do anything right. Be proactive-chase it up yourself. I don't understand how you haven't got an NI number either.

Yeah I have no idea why either (born in Hong Kong 1991, got a British passport, lived in Spain from 1995-2003, then lived in the UK since 2004. I think I will go to the Jobcentre in person to sort this out. Cheers!

Same happened to me. I am a UK national and have lived here all my life. I have had a NI insurance number since I was 16. The SFC said that it was normal and took a week to sort out while they just verify the NI number.

So did you not actually put the NI number down in your application?

Edit:This time I called again, Jobcentre Plus put me to HM Revenues and they checked my national insurance. I don't have a number! They also said Student Loans Company sorts it out for me...I am so confused! I'm not really stressing yet...until I have to pay my tuition fees XD.

Hey there, I am in the same situation as you, I phoned Jobcentre as well like 4 weeks ago and they told me that the StudentFinance will sort this out. After a two weeks or so I received a letter from Jobcentre to register for a National Insurance Number. I am still waiting for the NI to arrive tho, so I can pass it to StudentLoan. I phoned also the StudentLoan and they told me as soon as you receive your NI, then just call us and we will put it in the system, which will take another 2 weeks to process ¬.¬ You should get your grant though.

By the way, if you think you are not able to pay the Tution Fee at time, then just call your University up and explain to them your situation, as they can borrow you the money till you can pay and with no interest-fee. Qoute me for further sex-instructions.

I'm pretty sure you need a national insurance number to recieve payments. At least thats what I've been told. If you don't have one contact SFE and sort it out.

Just to let everyone know for future reference, Student Finance DID indeed sort it out for me (even though they said they didn't on the phone???). I got an interview letter but unfortunately I'm at Exeter and the nearest job centre is at Plymouth apparently.

I sent the interview letter to get my loan whilst I'll get my NI number in December back home.

Funny how we all have different issues with sfe. I have provided NI number. I have called twice. and told different things. still blocked on already approved loan. They say my NI is been sent to pensions for validation. is this what normally happens.
