    The binomial distribution can only be used when there is a fixed number of trials/events, each of which are independant of each other and occur with equal probability. The poisson distribution is used to model the number of events that can occur in a given time. In the case of the poisson, the number of events that can occur in the time is infinite, whereas with the binomial you have a given number of events.
