You see I'm hoping to be able to get through without being too good at aurals....I can sing so I'm sure I'll manage SOME marks! Completely bluffed my way through the grade 7 ones! x

Lucky you can sing! I can't!!

But I did manage to guess all modulation, cadences and chords in my last lesson so lets hope I get something obvious in the real thing!

Well done bohogirlie  It is always nice to pass music exams.
Sometime I am supposed to be doing Grade 8 flute...but haven't done an ABRSM exam since I did Grade 5 (I did 6, 7 with Guildhall), so it is going to be an interesting experience!

But first I have a band to get into (audition) :frown:, which I don't think I will, because there are only 6 flutes. Hmm!

Ok, I'll do yours m'dear and you do my grade 6 flute. Done aural practice then??

Congrats bohogirlie! What was your mark breakdown? I always fail aural and sight reading! (and occasionally, scales!)

I'm not sure of my mark breakdown, my teacher just text me last night to tell me my mark! Scales were really bad couldn't remember any! I guess i must have done ok in everything else!

You hate aural! And will do anything to avoid it!

I'm not sure about AB, but for guildhall you can do initiative tests, but they are much harder so i wouldn't recommend doing them!

I've just got the date through for my grade 8 clarinet- 13th July. I haven't even looked at the aural tests yet- I'm scared!!! 100 scales (or scale/exercise style things)!!! How cruel is that?!?! xxx

Good luck! I only looked at aural tests a few weeks before, i hate doing them so much! I didn't do much sight reading either. Me and my teacher always focus on the pieces, becasue thats where you get the most marks!

You don't really need to be able to sing though. Just 'sing' it loudly, don't do it quietly even if you are embarrassed!

I have an audition on July 13th :frown:
What kind of reeds do all the clarinettists here use? I used to swear by rico royal/gc evolution 3s but then I was converted to vandoren 2.5s but now with my grade 8 pieces the malcolm arnold is really loud so a 2.5 vandoren is perfect (also the need no wearing in at all) but for the saint-saens I have quite a few top Gs and As and vandorens (3s as well!) make it sound horrible up top. I've tried some rico gc evolution 3s and 3.5s and they give beautiful top notes but the rest doesn't sound as nice and is a bit kind of breathy and some notes don't come out in fast, quiet bits. I need a super reed!! x

I used to use ricos and the first thing my new (and current) teacher did, was made me chuck them out and change to vandorens, they have a much nicer sound in my opinion.

I use a 2 usually, but coming up to my exam and for it, i used a 2.5 as i was practising much more.
