    i have a pretty decent sony headunit with mp3 playback, etc., can someone tell me if i need a separate amp if i'm going to put a sub in the boot.

    usually yeah. Might get away with a small sub but anything over 6" and you'll be wanting an amp.

    It will have a sub preout which will then go to the amp. You can get sub tubes which have built in amps though- might be a good idea for you if you dont want loads of bass.

    Also decent + sony = nope. Sony's XPlode range is cheap crap. Pioneer or Alpine would be my choice.

    For a sub, an amp is a must. You'll destroy the speakers if the amp is underpowered......
