    So this exam is tomorrow and I'm really nervous after my terrible performance in Paper 1, does anyone have any hints and tips for me? I was really hoping for an A*, but I'm not sure if that can even happen anymore..

    Also, does anyone have any practice papers prior to 2003? Or know where I could get them from? I've done the ones on the AQA website, but I don't know where I could find anymore prior to the ones listed.

    'These papers are based upon the Edexcel papers.'
    A more complete answer is this:

    'All the exam boards (Edexcel, OCR, AQA, etc)

    must test the same National Curriculum (2004/5).

    So, broadly speaking, a trigonometry question on

    an Edexcel Higher paper must match the same

    level of difficulty as a trigonometry question on an

    OCR Higher paper. This is because trigonometry,

    to a certain clearly defined level, is a part of the

    National Curriculum. Consequently, there is a

    huge overlap between the exam syllabus of one

    exam board with the exam syllabus of another.

    I have chosen to use the Edexcel syllabus because

    it is the one most widely used, the one most popular

    with students and teachers, and because I feel it is

    the best. The law on copyright does not allow me to

    use the Edexcel papers word-for-word. So I have

    slightly re-written each question in each paper in

    order to make a 'replica' question as close as

    possible to the original. For example, suppose

    Question 4 in the real Edexcel Paper 5 begins....

    'John rolls a fair six-sided dice twice......'; my

    replica Question 4 will begin...'Jane spins a fair

    six-sided spinner twice.....' When re-writing the

    Questions I have made absolutely sure that the

    topic being tested and the level of difficulty match

    exactly those of the original Questions. This means

    that if you can understand my Model Answers to

    the replica Questions you should have no trouble

    with the real Questions because they are virtually

    identical. I hope this helps. ' Dr. Xargle.

    I can solve almost all higher qustions in above website, if you need help just ask!

    the prob i found is for the last module 5 non calc, i knew the syllabus inside out, im 2nd best @ maths in my class, i no my **** in maths! It was just the difficulty or rather, complexity of questions, the wording and the like if u have any idea what im going on about

    Hmmm...I'm just looking at a model question on percentages (http://www.gcsemathspastpapers.com/Examples.htm), which is to work out the interest on £5000 at 8% over 3 years. Of course after the first year, £400 interest would be earned. But the model answer just multiplies this by 3 to get the interest gained over 3 years. Surely you should work out 8% of £5400, then 8% of what that comes to to get the total amount of interest?

    I'm not doing modular..just..regular! (Don't know the name for it!)

    Ninja - I'm the same in my class too - I'm not in the top set, but I'm best in my group and I was predicted an A* (by all means - I'm not trying to sound snotty here) and I walked out of the exam with my confidence down on the floor..I was so confident, I guess I was just unprepared, even though I thought I knew most of the syllabus.

    the word "PER YEAR" also confuses me. they talking about SIMPLE interest so you only get interest on your investment. welllll i have already passed this module in feb so i don't need to worry much about it.

    My mistake, it's simple interest, not compound interest. Although I get the feeling simple interest isn't on the syllabus, we've never been told about it in class.

    I think the website is correct! You are working out COMPOUND interest and we are asked SIMPLE. have a look at this example from bbc website.

    Simple Interest
    In simple interest the amount borrowed stays fixed.
    £400 is borrowed for 3 years at 5 % pa (pa means per annum, or each year)
    Interest for one year = 5 % of £400
    = (5/100 ) × 400
    = £20
    Interest for 3 years = 5/100 × 400 × 3
    = £60

    You can write this in a formula
    Interest = P × R ×
    P(Principal) is the amount borrowed
    R is the rate of interest per year
    T is the time in years

    Compound Interest
    Here the interest is added to the principal at the end of each year. The next year the interest is worked out on a larger amount. This is how it is calculated.
    £400 is borrowed for 3 years at 5 % compound interest.



    Principal at the start = £400
    Interest in the 1st year = 5/100 × 400 = £20
    Principal after one year = £420

    Interest in the 2nd year = 5/100 × 420 = £21
    Principal after two years = £441

    Interest in the 3rd year = 5/100 × 441 = £22.05
    Principal after 3 years = £463.05

    The total interest charged under compound interest will be £63.05.
    This is different from the simple interest worked out above.

    We haven't either...are you doing AQA too? Perhaps it's just not on the AQA syllabus.

    Simple interest feels far too basic for higher tier, especially on a Calculator paper. Oh well, at least we'll know if it comes up. (I am on AQA).

    We got given a list, of all teh major topics that were not on the paper 1. So, we were told to revise them, in which im gonna go do in a minute.

    What I like to do is use the formula of:

    N=No (1+(r/100))t

    Basically
    No = Original amount
    r/100 = the percentage change to this would be 1+0.08
    t = number of years this occurs for so...

    N=5400 (1+0.08)3
    = £6802.44

    x+y = 5
    x^2 + 3y^2 = 49

    Okay look at the mark scheme :p: I've got it. x=5-y. Substitute that into 2nd equation.

    y=5-x
    y=5-x
    x^2+3(5-x)^2=49
    x^2+3(25-10x+x^2)=49
    x^2+75-30x+3x^2=49
    4x^2+26-30x
    2(2x^2+13-15x)
    2x^2+13-15x
    Now factorise using quadratic forumula 2x^2-15x+13

    i got x=-13

    x=-2

    now solve for y

    x+y=5

    -13+y=5

    y=5+13=18

    or y=7



    i didn't check my working out so sorry if the answer is wrong.
