Would you say things like helping out at parents' evenings, open evenings, sport days etc are something you should write about in your personal statement as evidence that you do things other than studying, or should the teacher include it in the reference so they can rant about how responsible and helpful you are?

I think, considering the unis you will be applying to, that you'll need to fill your ps with far more important things than that. The trouble is concentrating all the important stuff into limited space without it sounding like a list.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm good at writing factual essays, but when it comes to writing about myself, I find it really hard. I have the loose structure that I'm going to use worked out, but I still need to do some wider reading over the summer and some more extra-curricular stuff probably in September, so I can't write it yet. Thanks for your help though

My suggestion would be to write one, and keep going back to it for half an hour every couple of days to do a bit of re-writing. You'll find it'll soon develop.
